ERSC 1P01 –– Sedimentary Rocks
ASSIGNMENT DUE 31 hours after your ‘IN PERSON LAB’ i.e. 11:55 PM the next day
Objectives:
The identification of the common sedimentary rock-forming minerals and recognition of the
typical sedimentary rock textures, leading to the identification of the major types of
sedimentary rocks. To learn how to interpret what is seen in sedimentary rocks in order to
identify the depositional environment. Development of scientific observation and
descriptive skills.
General Instructions:
1. Go to the Lab Material>Lab 4: Sedimentary rocks page in Sakai. The two main
Sedimentary Rock types will be explained and demonstrated further in mini-video
demonstrations. A PDF document describing Sedimentary Rocks is also available for
you to download.
Make sure to watch each video to fully understand how to distinguish between the
Clastic and Chemical/Biogenic types of Sedimentary rocks. The first step to to
determining the Sedimentary rock name will be to determine what type of
sedimentary rock you are observing. You may want to take notes as you watch the
videos!
2. We will be reviewing the Sedimentary Rock types during the IN PERSON lab session.
You may also bring your own laptop/tablet AND HEADPHONES to your IN PERSON
lab sessions to rewatch and review the videos. There is ONE assignment question
document provided for you. At the END of this document is a Sedimentary Rock
Table which lists the questions in a TABLE format.
3. There are also Sedimentary ROCK ID TABLES provided for you in a separate PDF
document. The TABLES contains information on how to identify each Sedimentary
rock as well as overall descriptions for the sedimentary rocks. Use these tables to
determine the SEDIMENTARY ROCK NAME! In addition there is a Sedimentary
depositional environmental document that will also assist you with answering some
questions. You may print the documents and bring paper copies to your IN PERSON
lab OR you may wish to work directly from your own computer/tablet. (NOTE: Paper
copies will NOT be provided in your lab session!)
4. Note: The descriptions in the SEDIMENTARY ID TABLES provide overall-general
desciptions of the rock types. Make sure to descibe only what you see in the
presented sample (do not add information that is not there or marks will be
deducted).

*The sedimentary rock samples will be provided in your ‘IN PERSON’ lab session. You must
attend your scheduled ‘IN PERSON’ lab session in order to answer the questions and submit
this assignment. If you do not attend an ‘IN PERSON’ lab session but still attempt to submit
answers to this assignment this will be considered a violation of Brock’s academic
misconduct policy
.
SUBMITTING YOUR ASSIGNMENT AFTER YOUR IN PERSON LAB SESSION
1. The Sedimentary rock lab will become available for each individual lab section in the
Test and quizzes tool at 5:00 pm on the day of your Scheduled IN PERSON lab and will
be due by 11:55 pm the following day.
2. When you have answered all of your assignment questions you will then go to enter
the answers in the ‘Test and quizzes’ tool. Every student will be answering a unique
combination of thirty (30) questions randomly drawn from a bank of questions that
you have just answered. You may save your answers and go back to answering them
at a later time. However, if you ‘submit’ your answers and go back to ‘resubmit’ at a
later time– you will be presented with an entirely new randomized draw of
questions
to answer!
3. Each IN PERSON lab section will also be given a unique set of five (5) questions to
answer. The questions and associated igneous rock samples will ONLY be provided
during the IN PERSON lab session.
Assignment Questions
REMINDER! Please answer all questions before entering your answers under the
Tests &
Quizzes
section in Sakai.
Each question is worth 1 mark. Total marks = 35 (30 mks from
random draw of questions + 5mks for questions from each in person lab section).
SEDIMENTARY ROCK Assignment Questions
(This document is for rough work ONLY! This document DOES NOT need to be handed in!
ONLY ANSWERS SUBMITTED IN THE “TEST AND QUIZZES” TOOL WILL BE MARKED)
Answer
the question for the specific SEDIMENTARY rock sample provided!
How to answer questions in the ‘Test and quizzes’ tool?
1. Some of the questions will have ‘multiple choice’ answers available for you to choose
from. ‘Click’ the correct answer from the list provided.
2. Some of the questions will require you to write in your answer in either a ‘short
answer’ format. You DO NOT need to answer using sentences. ONE to TWO word
answers are recommended!
The following is the list of questions that you will be answering for this assignment. We
have also provided you with a Sedimentary Rock Table at the end of this document.
