Mauna Loa Volcano in Hawaii Erupts for the First Time in Nearly 40 Years
Northern Virginia Community College - GEO 200
Summary: This article is about a Hawaiian volcano erupting for the first time in 40 years. This volcano is named Mauna Loa. Mauna Loa is one of the largest active volcanos in the world.
Although dangerous, the volcanos lava had not breached the perimeter of its summit, this leaves any of the house below the summit to be safe, but that can be changed as time goes on. Most citizens are volcanologist are concerned about the possibility of new lava vents opening closer to
the residents of Hawaii. Mauna Loa is one of the most active volcanoes in most recent years, this volcano has erupted more than 30 times within the past 30 years.
Connection to GEO 200: This volcano is relevant to our class because we have recently learned about volcanoes and the way its produces rocks. The lava that has breached the surface will eventually turn into igneous rock, and later most likely into sedimentary rocks. The igneous rocks produced form the lava will become extrusive rocks. We also learned about how volcanoes along the ring of fire, or circum-pacific belt, are more likely to be active and dangerous. In GEO 200 we also learned about the types of volcanoes in the world, Mauna Loa is
a active shield volcano. This means we know the general shape of the volcano and how the basaltic lava may flow in the coming days. References
