Part 1 1. Explain the difference between aphanitic and phaneritic textures. Include the process differences that results in the difference. Aphanitic texture is made up of Igneous rocks that form on the earth's surface and have a very fine texture because of the crystals that are too small to see without magnification. Phaneritic texture is made up of Igneous rocks with large, visible crystals because of when the rock formed slowly in an underground magma chamber. 2. What is the significance of the term reaction in the name Bowen reaction series? As the temperature decreases, minerals that formed early may react with the remaining magma to form new minerals. Part 2 1. The codes for the granitic igneous rocks all start with the letter p which stands for plutonic. Define plutonic. Plutonic rocks are igneous rocks created at considerable depth below the earth's surface, making them subsurface igneous rocks. 2. Locate 5 types of igneous rocks found in Maryland and describe where in Maryland they are found on the surface (Name of the closest town is ok for location). Ellicott City Granodiorite near Ellicott City Guildford Quartz Monzonite near Simpson Villa City Kensington Quartz Diorite Henryton City Relay Quartz Diorite near Dorsay City Pegmatite Dikes near Pine Orchard City 3. What igneous rock type covers the larges surface area? Where is its location? The batholith is the largest igneous rock type. It is above the earth’s crust. 4. How old are most of the igneous rocks you identified? Igneous rocks can be as old as 4.6 billion years old but the oldest igneous rock i found was around 50 years old.
5. Look at the orientation of the different rock types on the map. Keeping in mind that the metamorphic rocks are more to the west, make a general statement about how the different types of rock are arranged on the map (also look at the vertical view). Why do you think this occurred? Looking at the map of Howard County, there is much metamorphic rock on the west and going to the east side from the west side, and you can see the rocks are changing from metamorphic rock to igneous rocks. When you get to the east side, you will notice that the rocks vary from metamorphic, igneous, and sedimentary rocks due to anticline.
