GEOL 1403 Metamorphic Rock Chart Observe and record the properties of the metamorphic rock samples listed in the first table and use them to identify the samples. Lists of properties can be found below along with directions for the interactive website. Grain Size: Gravel > 2 mm Sand 0.06-2 mm Silt 0.004-0.06 mm Clay < 0.004 mm Foliation: Foliated Non-foliated Composition: Can you identify any minerals in the rock? Other Observations: Color Banding Cleavage Directions: Go to the link provided on the chart below. Read the background information first. Scroll down and click on the sample number listed on your chart. A picture will appear. Select the properties you observe about the rock. Then select a rock name based on those properties. Click “Grade Identification”. A message will pop up indicating which properties you need to work on. When your rock information is correct, you can add the information to your rock chart. Geology.com has pictures of all the rocks and their properties for reference.
