Question 1
0.5 / 0.5 pts
To do this lab practical, you will need the background provided by the plate tectonic, volcano, and
faulting lectures and readings to fully appreciate and match the bad movie to the reason why the
movie displays bad earth science. Because the questions are pretty easy (I hope), this lab practical is
worth 1.5 points.
You will need to match the trailer to the explanation as to why the premise of the movie (or detail
shown in a portion of a clip) reflects the poor understanding of science by the movie makers.
Which movie clip (or portion of a movie clip) makes the mistake of showing no understanding
whatsoever of the following earth-science reality:
that volcanic activity is found most commonly in plate tectonic settings of extension and
compression.

I understand that making volcanoes blow up in LA and New York can be fun for movie makers. But
how stupid do they think the audience truly is? Maybe I shouldn't ask that question.

This clip

have to admit. However, there is no direct access to the inner core. And if the squirrel could be
transported there, the pressure and the heat would instantly kill it.
Question 3
0.5 / 0.5 pts
Which movie clip (or portion of a movie clip) makes the mistake of showing no understanding
whatsoever of the following earth-science reality:
There is no direct access from Earth's surface to the inner core. There are no "empty spaces" as
portrayed falsely in the clip. Here are 4 links to trailers of different disaster movies, of varying quality. One of these depicts an
historical event that actually occurred. The other three are fictional. You can pause this lab practical
and do research on your own to determine which disaster movie is an attempt to portray a real
event? Earthquake -

past). While the exact specifics may have been dramatized to fit a cinematic narrative, it is nice to
take a step back from planet-sized threats. However, despite stakes based more around one piece of
land, the writers and director Roar Uthaug does not shy away from reveling in every cliché you’d
expect from a film about a giant tsunami.
