ENVR 1301 Name:_____________________ Total Points: 100 Lab 6: Health and Climate Change Purpose: To understand the varied influences of the weather and climate on human health. Introduction: Climate change threatens human health and well-being in many ways. This includes impacts from increased extreme weather events, wildfire, decreased air quality, threats to mental health, and illnesses transmitted by food, water, and disease-carriers such as mosquitoes and ticks. Some of these health impacts are already underway in the United States. In this lab, we focus on understanding broadly the various health-related risks to climate change, globally and regionally. We will also explore the futuristic simulations, predictions, and resources to understand the factors considered while quantifying the degree of climate change. We will also assess the possible threats and mitigation to such impacts. Lastly, since not everyone is equally at risk, we will understand the factors considered to quantify the vulnerability of the population to these changes in climate happening now as well as in future. Analysis (100points): Q1. a. (10 points) What do the names for scenarios explored in IPCC’s 6 th Assessment Report (AR6) stand for? What model data set is used for it? List all the scenarios with explanation on what the numbers and the scenarios stand for. You can use the information from the following link: https://interactive-atlas.ipcc.ch/regional-information/about and the following table: 1
Model dataset: Scenarios and their meaning: b. (10 points) Explore the figure below and list the contributors to the global surface temperature change and the respective numbers associated with each (include CO 2 as well as others shown in the figure) for SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 scenarios based on AR6: https://www.ipcc.ch/report/ar6/wg1/figures/summary-for- policymakers/figure-spm-4 Q2. (20 points) As per the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), there are significant discrepancies in the degree to which any individual is at risk due to the 2
changing climate. Explore the determinants of the vulnerability of human health to climate change from the following link: https://www.epa.gov/climate-indicators/understanding-connections-between- climate-change-and-human-health Give one example of each. Q3. (20 points) Explore the regional health impacts for your region from the link given below: https://www.cdc.gov/climateandhealth/effects/default.htm List all and explain briefly how it affects human health. Q4. Extreme heat events are one of the many threats to public health in the United States because of the changing climate. The CDC Heat & Health Tracker provides local heat and health information so communities can better prepare for and respond to extreme heat events. Use the following link to investigate how the extreme heat affects your county: https://ephtracking.cdc.gov/Applications/heatTracker/ a. (10 points) Explore the three time-intervals under ‘projected’ and give the number of days anticipated over 90°F in the time periods along with the name of your county. b. (10 points) Explain the heat-related stress that threatens human health. Q5. (20 points) Health Co-Benefits refer to the positive effects that a policy or measure aimed at one objective might have on other objectives, thereby increasing the total benefits for society or the environment. Explore the Health and Co- Benefit activity on the following link and list at least 5 ways that you can opt for it in your day-to-day life: https://www.paho.org/en/snapshot-health-and-climate- change-americas 3
