Crime map #1: Northwest Chula Vista Motels and Hotels per annual CFS
Type of map: single symbol
Geographic area represented in the map: Northwest Chula Vista
Data on the map: Annual CFS of hotels and motels per room
Time period of the data: 2003
Creator of the map: CVPD (Chula Vista Police Department) Research and Analysis Unit (K Schmerler)
Components of the map:
This crime map provides information of Northwest Chula Vista
’
s motels and hotels by CFS per room
ratio. The legend provides us with the highest CFS hotspots in grey, and then it breaks down by color
where there were less than 0.5 miles, 0.5-1.0 miles, and then more than 1.0 miles. The scale is in
miles and ranges from 0 to a 0.5-mile radius.
Context of the map: N/A
Purpose of the map: I believe this map would fall under strategic crime analysis. This is because this
certain crime map provides information on a smaller community in the city. It appears as if
it’s
analyzing the different calls for service around the area and trying to possibly find a pattern between
motels and hotels in the area. This can help provide the community with better information to steer
clear of those places, ensuring better community safety. This map looks like it would be created to
provide statistics for the community that it is for.
Critique: I thought this was a very easy map to interpret, meaning the average community individual
would understand this when reading it. The legend is clear and uses distinct colors to map out
certain statistics. The scale also helps provide an accurate depiction of how far this map spans in the
community, however, I did not like how the map stated only the year. I would have liked to see more
precise dates and how it tied into where the calls for service came from.
Improvements: Two things I would improve on the map would be adding more precise dates and
maybe listing the towns within the bigger area where there were hotspots. It is sometimes hard to
just look at a map and immediately know what part of town it is without landmarks.
Crime Map #2: North County San Diego parolees and violent offenders
Type of map: single symbol
The geographic area represented in the map: North County San Diego
Data on the map: crime rate, ex-offender rate
The time period of the data: 8/30/04
Creator of the map: San Diego crime analysts, San Diego district attorney
Components of the map: This map covers North County San Diego and provides a depiction of the
crime rates per 1000 people in smaller areas around the county and compares it with the areas
where various parolees/probationers and violent crime committers are located. The legend provides
a ranging scale of how many crimes and how many offenders, the scale also shows the approximate
length of two miles compared to the map scale.
Context of the map: N/A
Purpose of the map: This map is part of strategic crime analysis because it provides information
about certain communities for the members of those communities to review. This allows people to
better understand their area and can allow them to be aware of their surroundings if they need to in
order to keep themselves safe.
Critique: I liked the way the map used color to help interpret the different amounts of crimes in the
area and how many offenders are in that area. This map covered a lot of ground, and it was hard to
interpret at first. I feel like the creator needed to label their data a little better and provide a few
town names on the map to understand better where these areas are close to.
Improvements: I would improve the labels on the data to help clear up any confusion on what
exactly the numbers mean, as well as label some of the towns within the county.
