GEOG 181-Lab 6 (25 Marks Total) Due Nov 2 @ 4PM
Part 1: QGIS Tutorial Videos
Start by downloading a6data.zip so that you can following along as you watch the
series of short instructional
videos
that introduce you to the software and techniques required to complete the following:
Part 2: Creating a Topographic Map and a Terrain Map with QGIS
Tasks:
1.
Create and export (as a .png) an 8.5”x11” topographic map at a scale of 1:50,000 of an interesting area
within the extent of the provided data. Your map should:
a.
not include any data from the cdem folder
b.
include and symbolize features from following shapefiles: contour_1, elevation_point_0,
residential_area_2, road_segment_1, waterbody_2, watercourse_1, wooded_area_2. Include
features from other provided shapefiles at your discretion
c.
have appropriate symbology for index and interval contours. To do this, explore the elevations of
the contour lines (see the attribute named: ‘e’). Decide/define what the index contours should be
for your map. Make sure that you label the index contours.
d.
use an appropriate coordinate reference system
e.
include a title, scale, legend, north arrow, etc.
(10
marks)
2.
Create and export (as a .png) a second
8.5”x11” map of the terrain for the same area. On this map:
a.
include the DEM (cdem_dem.tif) and hillshade (cdem_hillshade.tif). Use transparency effects
and/or color rendering/blending effects to achieve an effective visualization of the landscape.
b.
include major roads (from road_segment_1), and water bodies (waterbody_2)
c.
incorporate additional layers as you see fit to create an effective terrain map
d.
use an appropriate coordinate reference system
e.
include a scale, title, legend, north arrow, etc.
(10
marks)
3.
Describe what choices you made when deciding which layers to include on top of the dem/hillshade on
your second map. Which of the two map maps that you just created do you prefer and why? Is one map
better than the other? (5 marks)
I decided to include less data on the DEM/Hillshade map, Due to the gradient, I felt it was ok to omit the contour
lines as they tend to clutter the map and provide a very overwhelming map. The colour gradient provides a fairly
accurate indication of topography. I feel like from a general knowledge point of view, the terrain map more
accurately conveys the geographic data to9 the average person, with most of the information being conveyed
through differences in colour. To the lay person, or those with no specialized interest in the area, this terrain map
is the best way to convey the terrain features in a digestible way. For those with a more specialized interest, such
as geologists, field scientists, and others, the topographic map is much better. A 2D map allows for more
specialized layers to be shown without blocking the terrain features. The terrain is shown through contour lines,
which can also show more specific elevation data at specific locations.
