My total cost for 1 week of groceries is $75.04 including the eggs listed first. I am
honestly not surprised at all by the total, even though it is quite expensive to feed myself for 1
week. The total was lower than I expected, as I had the task of buying groceries for myself as my
parents were gone, and it was very expensive (just over $100). One thing to keep in mind is that
my total does not include the additional tax price. I don’t think keeping the total at $75.04 is
sustainable, as I will probably get sick of eating the same basic and cheap items of food every
week. If I decided to add a couple items or change a few items to healthier alternatives, I would
expect the price to rise to nearly $100. I think I could still afford groceries at that price, but
leaving less money for other things is not ideal.

After completing a quick Google search, it seems that food prices in northern Ontario are
higher than those in southern Ontario. Sources state that it is found that most people living in
northern Ontario spend nearly half of their total income on food. An organization called
Food
Not Bought
published an article stating that the average cost of a food basket for a family of four
for a month in northern community of Attawapiskat was $1,909 compared to $847 in Toronto.
One reason for this is the difficulty of getting groceries in the northern region, due to the lack of
roads in the winter and the shortage of people working during Covid. These two reasons would
interrupt the food supply chain for northern Ontario, as they are remotely located regions.

No, I did not know that Laurier’s Northdale campus had a community garden. It would be
interesting to go to it and check out what types of produce are available and grown in the garden.
Another question I would ask is if the season and weather changes influenced the produce grown.
I would also be curious to know what type of agriculture techniques are used at the community
garden to grow the produce. I would also like to know if the community garden is able to keep up
with the needs of all the students using this garden. I do think the idea and use of a community
garden is a very clean and sustainable way to feed students on campus, while creating a nice
space for people to go in their spare time. I personally would like students to interact with this
garden in a positive way, even pitching in to grow their own produce for other people and even
helping maintain the crops grown, after all, it is a community garden.
