Data Visualization & Interpretation Assignment
This assignment must be completed
individually
(i.e., you have made your own graphs), with written
answers completed
individually
and written in your
own words
.
Global Annual Ocean Anomaly tab
1)
Scatterplot – Temperature anomalies by year (1900-2021)
Paste your scatterplot that shows the relationship between year and temperature anomaly. Make sure
your figure includes appropriate axis labels (including units, as needed) and the sample figure caption
(updated if necessary to match what your graph shows).
2)
In at least 2-3 sentences, describe the “take home” message of your first graph (e.g., what is the graph
showing?) Specifically: How did year and temperature anomaly relate to each other? Was the linear fit
(trendline) positive, negative, or flat?
When was the last year the temperature anomaly was
below
the
1901-2000 average? What does this graph suggest about the global ocean environment and its organisms,
now and in the future (if the trend continues)?
The year and the annual global ocean water temperature anomaly are have a direct positive relationship. As time
progresses so do the temperature anomalies. The linear fit line has a positive trend. The last year the
temperature anomaly was below the 1901-2000 average was in 1970. This scatter plot and linear trend suggest
that the ocean is slowly warming, which could destroy habitats both in the water and on land, both due to the
rising temperature that organisms wouldn’t be used to and the rising sea levels that would impact both ocean
and coastline environments.
Caribbean Temp. Decade tab
3)
Bar graph – Mean temperature anomalies by decade
ECOL 1000L
Paste your bar graph of the mean temperature anomaly by decade in the Caribbean (1910-1919 through
2020-2021). Your graph should include 95% confidence error bars, appropriately labeled axes (including
units, as needed), and the completed figure caption that explains what the graph is showing.
4)
In at least 1-2 sentences, describe the “take home” message of your second graph. Specifically: How
does the mean temperature anomaly differ among decades? Are the trends in the Caribbean similar to
or different from the global trend you explored in part 1?
The mean temperature anomalies increase throughout decades except for in the 1930s and 1970s. It also
shows the dramatic increase of temperature in the 2000s to now compared to the rest of the bar graph.
These trends are consistent with the trend described in part one, in that the temperature anomaly is slowly
increasing.

2020 Water Temp. tab
5)
Scatterplot – Daily midnight minimum, mean, and maximum temperatures
Paste your scatterplot that shows the minimum, mean, and maximum monthly mean water
temperatures in Vaca Key, Florida. Make sure your figure includes appropriate axis labels (with units,
when needed), a legend, and the completed figure caption that explains what the graph is showing.
6)
Bar graph – Risks of coral bleaching
Paste your bar graph showing the total days per month in 2021 when daily mean water temperatures
exceeded 30.4°C at Vaca Key. Make sure your figure includes appropriate axis labels (including labels,
when needed) and the completed figure caption that explains what the graph is showing
7)
In at least 3-4 sentences, describe the “take home” messages of your third and fourth graphs.
Specifically: What patterns do you observe in water temperature changes throughout the year? What

patterns do you observe in the number of days when water temperature exceed 30.4°C throughout the
year? What might these patterns mean for coral reefs in the Caribbean, and the organisms that inhabit
them?
The midnight water temperature in Vaca Key, Florida gradually get warmer until August. After
August the temperature starts to slightly decrease as fall and winter comes. The days where the
water temperature is above 30.4 are almost all in the summer, with September surprisingly having
the most days above that threshold. This data means that the coral reefs in the Caribbean are
struggling and will eventually die out because they cannot be healthy and withstand temperature
above 30.4. In the future, the livelihood of the Caribbean reefs and the organisms that inhabit them
are in jeopardy.
