Weather and Climate G109 1 The purpose of this assignment is (1) to review the basics of hurricane formation, and (2) gain experience searching for and analyzing hurricane data from the NOAA National Hurricane Center website. Part I Answer the following questions, feel free to use materials in your textbook or google to find these answers but make sure not to copy and paste what you find verbatim. Instead, please paraphrase the answer into your own words. 1. What is a hurricane? (5 points) A hurricane can be described as a cyclone that has very violent winds and starts in water and moves towards land. They can reach high speeds and winds and create huge storms when moving onto land. 2. Where on earth do hurricanes occur? (5 points) The tropics, in the warmer bodies of water, where the air is warm. 3. What climatic conditions are necessary for hurricane formation? (10 points) To form a hurricane, you need warm ocean waters, with high humidity going upward over low- pressure areas of the water because that creates the clouds and thunderstorms of the hurricane. Tropical winds which will allow the storm to move and rotate. 4. What time(s) during the year have the most favorable conditions for hurricane formation and why? (10 points) Hurricane season is usually from June 1 st to November 30 th . Because the water need to be warm and above a certain degree and for the US waters it is summer in those times so the water would be warm and lots of humidity and warm air that rises over the waters.
