Event:
Hurricane Maria
1.
WHERE ? Hurricane Maria hit a good number of islands in the Caribbean including the mainly affected areas like Puerto Rico, Martinique, and Dominica. 2.
WHEN ? This happened during September 16, 2017 to October 2, 2017. It started to slow down around September 30, 2017. 3.
WHAT ?
Chaos in politics, natural disasters, and environmental problems were all brought on by Hurricane Maria. Many environments, including people's homes, companies, and land, were impacted. It had an impact on the environment because of the floods, and because of how strong the wind was,
some structures that weren't built to withstand it were demolished. About 80% of Puerto Rico's territory was destroyed by a category four hurricane.
4.
Impact of the migration at the local level.
3,800 Puerto Ricans migrated to the north following Hurricane Maria, while 50,000 moved to the south, as reported by estimates. Because of the assistance FEMA offered, the remaining 47,200 individuals temporarily migrated to America.
5.
Impact of the migration at the regional level.
Approximately 130,000 Puerto Ricans moved from Puerto Rico to Florida and New York. They moved to those areas in response to FEMA's assistance for
families whose homes were destroyed by Hurricane Maria and the potential for fatalities.
6.
Impact of the migration at the global level.
Six months after Hurricane Maria hit, studies suggest that 5% of Puerto Ricans moved to the United States.
7.
Where do you think the impact of this forced migration has been greatest:
at the local, regional, or global level? Explain why.
I think the local level had the biggest impact as there were many lives that were lost over time, and it changed many people’s daily lives. The regional and global impact were truly very impactful but local impact affected the most communities and causes many consequences.
