Meteorology Lab to Accompany Chapter 3
Special note: see document on Fahrenheit/Celsius conversions for temperature ranges in “files” You will be doing internet searches for climographs (or climate graphs) for this lab. We will then focus on temperature data contained within the climographs. As an example of a climograph, suppose you do an internet search for “Minneapolis climograph.” You should find some images popping up of climographs, and one such image (I tried to choose a high-quality climograph) I copied and pasted here:
If you pay attention to the red curve on the graph, you can learn something about
the mean monthly temperatures for Minneapolis. The green bar graph portion of
the above image deals with precipitation, which we don’t care about right now. As an example, if you look at July and find the red dot corresponding to July, the temperature reading for the red dot is about 72 degrees in Fahrenheit. This is the mean temperature for July. Now suppose you want to find the annual temperature range. You
would find the warmest monthly mean temperature (July: 72 degrees) and subtract the coldest monthly mean temperature (January: 13 degrees): 72-13 = 59 degrees.
1)
Let’s compare Los Angeles, California and Phoenix, Arizona.
1a)
Copy and paste a climograph for Los Angeles here. 1b)
Copy and paste a climograph here for Phoenix.
1c)
What are the annual temperature ranges for the two cities? Place your answers in the chart below. A Celsius/Fahrenheit converter, if needed, can be found at
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/html/tempconversion.shtml
Be careful! Be sure to read the document on Celsius/Fahrenheit conversions pointed out at the top of this lab!
city
Range in degrees Celsius
Range in degrees Fahrenheit
Los Angeles
Phoenix
1d)
Considering factors that control the temperature (found throughout chapter 3 of your textbook), why do these two cities have such a large difference
in annual temperature ranges? Be careful. What does the range
tell us? Don’t confuse this with the mean.
2)
We will now compare Los Angeles to Savannah, Georgia. 2a)
Find a climograph (or climate graph) for Savannah and paste it here. 2b)
Complete this chart:
city
Range in degrees Celsius
Range in degrees Fahrenheit
Los Angeles
Savannah
2c)
Both of these cities are next to the ocean. Why is there such a difference in
temperature ranges between these two cities? Once again, consider temperature
controls that are presented in chapter 3 of your textbook.
3)
We will now compare Grand Junction, Colorado to Leadville, Colorado.

3a)
Copy and paste a climograph for Grand Junction here:
3b)
Also, record the elevation (you may have to do a separate search to find “Grand Junction elevation”) of Grand Junction here. You can search for an online calculator that automatically does the meters
feet conversion and vice versa.
Elevation in meters
Elevation in feet

3c)
Copy and paste a climograph for Leadville here. This might be a little harder to find, but you can find it. You may find a climograph that has two curves:
one curve is the average high temperature for each month, and the other is the average low temperature for each month. You can subtract the low from the high
to get the mean temperature
3d)
Also, record the elevation of Leadville here:
Elevation in meters
Elevation in feet

3e)
Let’s write down the July mean temperature in both Celsius and Fahrenheit:
Mean in Celsius degrees
Mean in Fahrenheit degrees Grand Junction
Leadville
3f)
Explain why the mean temperatures recorded above vary between the two locations.
4)
Let’s compare Newport, Oregon to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. 4a)
Insert Newport’s climograph here:
4b)
What is Newport’s latitude?
?
4c)
Insert Halifax’s climograph here:
4d)
What is Halifax’s latitude?
?
4e)
Complete this chart:
Warmest month
Highest monthly mean in Celsius
Highest monthly mean in Fahrenheit
Newport
Halifax
4f)
Considering that their latitudes are similar, why is there a difference in their
warmest month’s monthly means? Be specific. (See textbook or online map of ocean currents.)
5)
Let’s compare cities at different latitudes. Make note of the latitude of each city and record the latitude in the chart below.
5a)
Insert a climograph for Kampala, Uganda here:
5b)
Insert a climograph for Dhaka, Bangladesh
here:
5c)
Insert a climograph for Yellowknife, Canada
here:

5d)
First of all, find the annual temperature ranges (calculate them) for these three locations in both Celsius and Fahrenheit. If you are converting between Celsius and Fahrenheit, do it the correct way (see document in “files”).
latitude
Range in Celsius
Range in Fahrenheit
Kampala
Dhaka
Yellowknife
5e)
Which location has the highest annual temperature range? Explain (in terms of the sun’s light, see question 4 of lab 2).
5f)
What are the warmest two months in Dhaka? 5g)
Why are the warmest months earlier in the year than we might expect? (There is a climograph of Yangoon, Myanmar in your textbook. Yangoon has a climograph similar to Dhaka. You might want to look at Yangoon’s climograph for a hint.)
5h)
Why is Kampala’s annual temperature range small?
