2 Question Response Chosen Region Japan 1. Location and Connectivity:  What are the absolute and relative locations of your selected region? How does this region connect to others? Absolute latitude and longitude location for Japan is 36.2048 deg N, 138.2529 deg W. Japan is off the coast of Russia, North Korea, and South Korea. Japan consists of four major islands Honshu the largest, Hokkaido to the north, and Shikoku and Kyushu to the south (Nijman, 2020) . 2. Physical Characteristics:  How would you describe the climate, physiography, landscape, and natural hazards of your selected region? Address at least three of the physical characteristics listed above for this worksheet. Note:  This is part of the Place theme of geography. Northern Japan has warm summers and very cold winters with heavy snow on the seaside of Japan and in mountainous areas, western Japan Okinawa and Amami have very hot and humid summers with moderate cold winters (japan meteroligical agency, n.d.) . Japan is on the ring of fire an area with several tectonic plate which makes them more susceptible to earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions (Klein, 2023) . ¾ of Japan is mountainous terrain and it is an island filled with many beaches. 3. Human Characteristics:  What are the language families/groups, religions, races, and cultures of your selected region? What are the region’s population density and economic development? Address at least three of the human characteristics listed above for this worksheet. Note:  This also is part of the Place theme of geography. The two main religions practiced in Japan are Shinto and Buddhism, these two religions account for 90 percent of the population (Watt, 2003) . In 2015 Japan’s population density was the Highest but has been on a decline since, The high cost of education and a highly developed society has contributed to the low birth rate and it is now 343.26 people per square kilometer (GlobalData, 2022) . At the end of the 1980s Japan was reported to surpass even the US in economic development but then slowed down due to more auto makers coming up from all over the world but today Japan still remains a formidable economic power and has the world’s third largest economy (Nijman, 2020) . 4. Human/Environment   Interactions:  How do the physical and human characteristics interact to produce notable observations of Illegal logging in Japan has destroyed the Forests, only 40$ of the timber distributed in Japan is deemed legal

Japan incinerates 73% of their waste that releases greenhouse gasses that negatively effects the health of local communities (Koons, 2023) . 5. Movement:  With how much ease and ability do ideas, goods, and people flow in and out of your selected region? What drives this movement? Japan trades goods primarily through air and ship, the US is Japan’s biggest trading partners. Most trade in Japan is conducted by the nine commercial houses known as Sogo Shosha.
