Chile is in Southern South America, bordering the South Pacific Ocean,
between Argentina and Peru. Their flag, shown above has a white and red
line and a blue square with a five-pointed star in the center. The star
represents a guide to progress and honor; the blue line symbolizes the sky,
the white represents the snow-covered Andes, and red represents the blood
spilled to achieve independence (Central Intelligence Agency, 2023) Their
government is a presidential republic. They achieved their independence
from Spain on September 18, 1810 (Central Intelligence Agency, 2023). Their
currency is called Chilean pesos.
The Climate in Chile is diverse, including desert in the north;
Mediterranean in the central region; and cool subantarctic in the south
(Carmagnani et al., 2023). Volcanic eruptions, violent earthquakes, and
tsunamis originating along major faults of the ocean floor, winter storms and
flash floods and severe summer droughts occur in different parts of the
country (Carmagnani et al., 2023). The terrain is low coastal mountains,
fertile central valley, and the rugged Andes in the east (Carmagnani et al.,
2023). The highest point of elevation there is at Nevado Ojos del Salado (the
world’s highest volcano) which is 6,893 m (Central Intelligence Agency,
2023). Spanish is the official language in Chile but there are other languages
spoken there such as English and Indigenous (includes Mapudungun,
Aymara, Quechua, Rapa Nui) (Central Intelligence Agency, 2023). The
religion most follow is Roman Catholic.
Before the 1900’s, after Chile had won its independence from Spain, the
country became riddled with different democratic and socialist parties all
wanting control and the people suffered economically due to the ongoing
turmoil and political activism (Carmagnani et al., 2023). Chile had become a
country of emigration due to their instability but has slowly become more
attractive to immigrants since transitioning to democracy in 1990 and
improving its economic stability (Central Intelligence Agency, 2023).
Presently the poverty rate in Chile is lower than most Latin American
countries, however 90% of the population is in the middle of the country
around the capital of Santiago which has led to uneven income distribution
and unequal access to education (Central Intelligence Agency, 2023). They
also house about 448,138 refugees from Venezuela due to that countries
economic and political crisis (Central Intelligence Agency, 2023).
Indigenous cultures of Chile blended with European (especially Spanish)
cultures make up the present Chilean culture. The food in Chile plays an
important role in portraying the culture because it is a blend of Indigenous
and European cuisine. The national dish of the country combines indigenous
ingredients such as corn, beans, and squash with Spanish contributions such
as garlic and onion (Nag, 2018). Due to its diverse climate, some popular
sports are football, skiing and snowboarding as well as surfing (Nag, 2018).
The Cueca is the national dance of Chile that was primarily promoted during
the Pinochet regime in the 1970’s and 80’s to promote Chilean nationalism
and cultural pride. Chile also has a history of supporting the arts and is home
to two famous Nobel Prize-winning Chilean poets whose literary work have a
significant influence on the Chilean culture, they are Gabriela Mistral and
Pablo Neruda (Nag, 2018). Many religious festivals are held in Chile, including
La Tirana festival, more than 150,000 people dance in the streets of the
village of La Tirana which is a celebration in the name of Virgen del Carmen,
but some traditions stretch back hundreds of years to the indigenous Andean
peoples and the Music, masks and costumes used at the festival have
historical significance (Nag, 2018).
