4.2.1 Mapping Innovation Components of a Geographic Information System (GIS) Define each term in your own words. Spatial Information Attribute Information Features describes how objects fit together in space or on Earth. Nonspatial information about a geographic feature in a geographic information system A representation of a real-world object on a map. Examine a Map Layers within a GIS Map Describe Base Layer Oceans Operational Layer Locations of Deep-Sea Corals and Sponges Deep-Sea Corals and Sponges Map Pan and zoom within the map area until you have highlighted a small region along the Pacific Coast of the United States. Use the snapshot feature to record below the region of study. Click the Screenshot icon located in the upper-right corner of the map application. Opt to include the map legend and/or pop-up in the image. To include a pop- up, select a map feature such as a coral or sponge location symbol. Click Set the map area. Draw a rectangle to select a region to capture. Click Download image to create a digital image of the map region. Insert image here:
Use the legend to identify the common name of deep-sea sponges in the region you selected. Note: For additional information on each species, select an icon to open a pop-up box. Explore the biodiversity in the region. What are the three main species of sponges in the region? glass sponge, demosponge, Unspecified, (Coast of California) Click the Layer tool at the bottom-right corner of the map. Note: To toggle the visibility of each layer, select the eye icon to the left of the “Seafloor Salinity (pss)” and “Seafloor Dissolved Oxygen (ml/l)” layers. Describe the level of dissolved oxygen and the average seafloor salinity level in your region of study. Sea floor dissolved oxygen is 4.1ml/l and the Seafloor salinity is 34.7 g/kg. On the Seafloor: How do dissolved oxygen and salinity levels impact the biodiversity of deep-sea sponges and corals? “Changes in temperature and dissolved oxygen that go beyond what the deep-sea corals and sponges are used to could stress the species' physiology affecting growth, tissue loss and reproduction.” “Sea Change.” UNH Today, 22 Apr. 2021, www.unh.edu/unhtoday/2021/04/sea- change#:~:text=%E2%80%9CChanges%20in%20temperature%20and %20dissolved,level%20where%20sunlight%20is%20nonexistent . ArcGIS Online
Record the species name and location information for each sponge class sample you are harvesting. Glass Sponge: Blake Plateau, Atlantic Ocean, Florida Coast Demosponge: Blake Plateau, Atlantic Ocean, Florida Coast Sponge Unspecified: Blake Plateau, Atlantic Ocean, Florida Coast Insert screenshots below of the pop-up boxes for each sample to verify each criterion has been met. Write one to two paragraphs to justify your sample selection. The reason I chose these sponges was because they were the only ones that I had access to in Blake Plateau.
