Global Warming: Cause and Consequences
Global warming is a gradual increase in the overall global air temperature. This gradual
rise has the potential to drastically change the weather and meteorological conditions all over the
world by disrupting the balance and stability between the warm air radiated from the earth's
surface and the solar energy from the sun (Keating, 2013). The numerous gases in the
atmosphere absorb the heat energy from the earth, stopping it from leaking into space, which is
known as the greenhouse effect. These greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide, methane, and
water vapor. They capture ultraviolet energy making the atmosphere maintain more heat, thus
becoming warmer (Keating, 2013). The atmospherics temperature has been on the rise for a long
time, but it has become a severe issue in the recent past decade because of the increase in those
gases in the atmosphere.
Many factors cause global warming, but man is on the top of that list. These factors
include and not limited to, rise in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, deforestation, operating
factories and automobiles, and the use of chemicals on farms. Human factors are a significant
instigator as they are responsible for discharging loads of tons of carbon dioxide into the air over
the past couple of centuries. There are several evidence and reasons to support this.
The use of fuel and power sources that pollute the air is one of the leading causes of
pollution. Americans drove their automobiles more than five trillion kilometers in the year 2015,
as stated by new statistics published recently by the Department of Transportation's Federal
Highway Administration (Bayeh & Alemayehu, 2019). This continuous carbon emission is
responsible for most of the global warming. Burning fossil fuels such as petroleum play a part by
releasing carbon dioxide and other harmful gases. Also, the use of coal to make electricity is

another carbon emission source. Curbing global warming requires deep cuts in emissions and
using alternative sources of fuel.
Deforestation is another cause of global warming. The best way to neutralize carbon
emissions is to remove them from the atmosphere. Trees are a natural way of keeping the
equilibrium by absorbing carbon dioxide from the air. A typical hardwood can absorb as much as
one ton of carbon dioxide in its forty-year lifespan.
Global warming has many consequences ranging from environmental, economic, and
health effects all around the globe. The continued rise in atmospheric temperatures has fueled
lengthier and fiercer heatwaves, more recurrent droughts, and more powerful storms
accompanied by more torrential rainfall. The continuing drought in California has increased by a
fifth, increasing the peril of wildfires in the West of America. The hotter heatwaves have
increased the earth's ocean temperatures, causing more powerful tropical storms. When put into
perspective, it means that global warming can change a type three storm and turn it into a more
severe and dangerous type four storm. Scientists have noted an increase in the frequency of
hurricanes in the North Atlantic coupled with more category four and category five storms such
as Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Sandy.
The extreme heatwaves have been felt all around the globe, causing tens of thousands of
deaths in recent years. Antarctica has lost many tons of glaciers yearly since 2012 causing deaths
of the sea animals around the region. The melting glaciers and early snowmelts have caused
more drastic water shortages in some parts and rising sea levels in others (Promduangsri &
Crookall, 2018). The rising sea levels have resulted in floods on the eastern seaboard, especially
in the Latin America region and in Florida. Heatwaves, floods, and torrential downpours will

damage human life, cities, agriculture, and fisheries. This disruption of the climate will disrupt
the aquatic habitats such as coral reefs resulting in some of the indigenous species extinction.
The disruption of climate will favor the amplified development of pollen-producing
ragwort, increased air and water pollution, and other conditions that are conducive and favorable
to pathogens, which can lead to epidemics. This will result in an increased number of allergies
and infectious disease outbreaks (Khan, 2017).
Global warming has become a leading problem for humanization as it is causing harmful
effects to man, faunae, florae, and the globe. Since people are the leading cause of global
warming, they should first and foremost refrain from all those actions that caused global
warming. Then everyone should take part in helping minimize the effects of global warming by
driving less, using fossil-based fuels, and planting more trees.
