Week 1 Discussion: Introduction
Hello everyone,
My name is Morgan and I am 29 years old. I work in the finance department for the American Heart Association (AHA) and have been there for two years. I completed my undergraduate program here at SNHU this past June and immediately began my graduate program afterwards. I am pursuing an MBA with a concentration in finance. My goal is to gain knowledge from this course that would help me cultivate new and improved systems, procedures, and campaigns for the AHA. Although my focus will be primarily on the workings of the finance department, I also want innovative thinking skills that will allow me to introduce new ideas that benefit all departments of the AHA.
In my current job position, I did create an innovative way of sharing key financial updates with my team. I am in charge of all things finance for multiple markets. Each market consists of fundraising directors, marketing directors, community impact directors, data personnel, and logistics personnel. All of the members of my teams have very different responsibilities, but they all come to me for finance related information. When I first started this job, I found it very overwhelming trying to share the necessary information with each member of my team because there were so many different elements for each person. Eventually, I came up with
a clean and organized excel spreadsheet that was easy to read and highlighted the key information each person needed.
I essentially combined every single complex aspect of my job into one document that can be easily understood by every member of my team. In addition, I linked cells from my regularly updated excel accounting books to the respective cells in the team's excel spreadsheet so it would continuously update as I made changes to my books. I began sharing this report with my teams weekly. As word spread about the report, I was asked to host a training call to show the rest of the finance department how to create this report, as it would
become a new requirement. I absolutely loved creating a new report that became beneficial to everyone. This entire experience has caused me to constantly look for things within the company that need to be simplified or restructured and try
to brainstorm a solution. I believe becoming more innovative would help me advance within the company and set me apart from others.
