CRITICAL ANALYSIS PORTFOLIO 3 Critical Analysis Portfolio Introduction When a baby is born in a Nigerian home, the first prayer the parents pray for the child despite believes and religion is for the child to be a doctor, lawyer, nurse or any 6-10 figure jobs. This simple prayer turns into the parents’ obsession to make sure from the time the child starts writing and talking to prepare them for the dream job the parents want them to have. I have been a victim of my Nigerian dad imposing a career on me, a career I was not sure I wanted to follow. This has caused many of our parents, peers, and even our generation in a long run to face some issues within themselves. Lens Connection 1 History . Bardick, Bernes, Magnusson and Witko all gathered to write Career Development in Childhood and Adolescence and discussed how children develop their career path. The issue topic was based on how parents have the biggest influence on their children career planning. They believed that parents have the biggest influence than teachers, counselors, friends, or other people around them. Monique Betty, MBA, PCC a certified life coach on LinkedIn stated studies 30 plus years has identify the trend of how adolescents and even independent ones are influenced by their parents on their career path. (Betty, 2021) The comprehensive study of Middleton and Loughead of 1993 believed there are three types of parents when it comes to advising a child on their careers: 1. Parents who have a positive involvement- This parent encourage their children to follow the career path they want. Encourages them to explore their options.

CRITICAL ANALYSIS PORTFOLIO 4 2. Non-supportive parents- This parent doesn’t understand what they can do to help their child, and probably don’t want to. 3. Negatively involved parents- This parent likes to force their child on a career path. This is usually not for their own child benefit but their own. This can be a bad experience for a child on the path of their career ‘choice’. Humanities. A student at National Institute of Technology of Odisha, India created a two-part assessment for the students to understand the psychological impact parents have on the career choices of their children. Her assessment started by asking the student about their age, name, gender, date of birth, school, and occupations. Then proceed buy asking the parents education, and occupation. In part two of the questionnaire the question got even more interesting. The first two question of part 2 asked if the student is satisfied with their career choice, and if it was imposed to them by someone else. (Sample assessment at the bottom) Singh study’s shows that students would do better in their careers if they follow their own career path instead of their parents. Natural and applied sciences. Although, it's good to get parents advice on career path and colleges, as student, we should understand that some decisions, we make will have consequences. It's important to know the right career path that best fits us. Word of encouragement is the best step of ensuring your child that you support them. Parents and children should collaborate together to discussion career path that best for that child, allowing the child to have control over their own career path, this will allow the student or the child to discover themselves in truth.
CRITICAL ANALYSIS PORTFOLIO 5 Social Science . There is also cultural impact on imposing a career on a child. From My own experience my dad had tried to impose a career on me because he knew having a doctor for a child looked good and was a good thing to brag about. My dad comes from a family where all the children of non-educated parents are doctors, lawyers, and bank managers. Now my dad and his siblings expect all their children to follow in the same footsteps. My dad and I had issue as I started to mature. In 2014 after my first year in college I had to think if I was doing this for me or for my dad. I had to drop out because I was diagnosed with depression and started having suicidal thoughts. Thank God for a mom who’s always been supportive, and always told me and my brothers that we will be the best in anything we choose to do in life. Unfortunately, many students don’t have a parent that's supportive. Research has shown that more Indian students in college who follows the career path of their parents’ choice are at higher risk of having depression, lack of sleep, poor eaten habit, and not enough exercise which is linked to depression. It's even shown that some of those students have committed suicide. The I Dream Career blog titled one of their articles as An Open Letter to Indian Parents – “Your Child's Career Path: A Free Will or a Forced Choice?”, the article stated that the percentage of students committing suicide in Kota has risen in 2020. In the city of Kota 45 students had committed suicide because their depressed-on careers that their parents have imposed on them.(2020) Target jobs did a survey to reveal parental influence on students career choice and they came up with only 27% student that took the survey had discuss alternative university with their parents, while 9% of parents told their child they don't know how to get information’s, 43% of the parents felt that a degree will improve their children's life with a long-term degree for a career, 70% of the parents encourage their child to go to a university. Out of the students that took the survey 66% of them felt that their parents were right and depressed, while 7% of the students thought their

(Targetjobs, 2014) History 1 In Chinese culture education and occupation has been adopted to the traditions. Around the 1950s the Chinese community worked hard to increase the literacy rate of the country. (Otto,2000) Family dynamic and parent-child interactions has also been a big influence on the educational and occupational paths and choices. The statement Tiger parenting is a name that was given to strict parents by a professor in the 2011She gave a name to a concept that parents put all Asian children through, which means that their parents are strict, still follow their culture views on training a child, and don’t agree with the Western approaches in parenting. All though the term has been in the community for years prior it was brought to the light by a Yale Law School professor Amy Chua in a memoir that she had done name Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother in 2011. Professor Chua talked about the strict parenting styles that East Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia has adopted. The concept of tiger parenting can be found in the ancient Confucian, which was written more than two millennia ago, which made filial piety, family values, hard work, enduring hardship, honesty, and dedicating oneself towards academic excellence through the purist of knowledge very important to the culture, which has shaped the education system in Asia today. The culture view education important for someone to be able to have a cultural statue. In the ancient Chinese believe was that education was the main way of being connected to the social mobility in the ancient and medieval Chinese societies. (2020) Tiger parent believe getting their children to over learn schoolwork, stay ahead, and even encourage their children to join activities that contains math, science, English or any language arts program to ensure their children has the best chance to be successful in their career. CRITICAL ANALYSIS PORTFOLIO 7 causes a lot of the parents to control their children psychologically and behaviorally. The psychological control is to make sure the children is obedient by manipulation, and behavioral control is to set limits on children’s academic activities. (Kim, 2013) Humanities In ancient China it was categorized in different scheme like six arts, the seven epitomes, and even four branches which conducted research and educations that generally took place in classical learning, Imperial College such as private schools, and Buddhist temples. (Hui, Tsinghua) Now Western education is becoming adopted by a lot of developing countries and culture is most likely being lost in this new transaction. Children are becoming more outspoken and following their own career paths. It forced China to prepare their students for what the deemed ‘practical’ skills replacing the cultural view of education. The first established westernized school was Beiyang Naval School that was established August 1881, which was established for military reasons. Parents feel the pressure to enforce cultural believes on their children to make sure they still have the old Chinese education system in them still. In Chinese culture will still and always in my opinion influence the way parents impose education on their children, no matter the change on the economy or the country, tradition and culture is important to follow. Social Science & The Natural and Applied Sciences Kristen Tillman a student at Georgia Southern University investigated to see the influence that parents have on the career process of their children who were service teachers. The experiment was conducted by dividing the service teachers in two groups of educate parents and
CRITICAL ANALYSIS PORTFOLIO 8 non-educated parents, which the results showed that educated parents had the most influence on their children education, and mostly discourage from following their dream and following a career path that they felt is best for their children. Her experiment was able to dive and give a clear understanding on what type of parents do more of the influence. Earlier I stated there are three different types of parents when it comes to imposing a career on a child, which is Parents who have a positive involvement, non-supportive parents, and negatively involved parents. The educated parents in these experiments are examples of parents that are negatively involved. The volunteers in the experiments all are in a career because their parents wanted them to embark on a journey that was imposed on them by the parent. A student from University of Central Florida name Latashia L. Joseph also conducted an experiment to see how many students’ parents imposes on their student career. In her findings gave a more understanding in the deeper meaning, and how it has affected student, and how professionals should be educated on how to incorporate families as to have little to no delays in achieving their desire career path. Latashia starts by stating there is not enough counselor for children to go to at school to receive the proper help. I remember 12th grade I had schedule time with my counselor, and it was hard to set a date to meet because she was always busy with meeting with other students, and she traveled to other schools in the district. Her founding showed that a child that lacks the guidance from a counselor will most likely not make the right decision in their career. Although people might not see the purpose for a counselor, but they are there to consul children not only on emotions, school, trauma but on their career. My 4 years in high school I
CRITICAL ANALYSIS PORTFOLIO 9 didn’t know counselors were also there to help me with my academics and career finding, until I was in 12 th grade and had a lot of trouble trying to find out what I wanted to do after school. My counselor was able to help suggest occupations and career for caring for people like medical, counseling etc. Scientist has believed that since the decision-making process starts quite early on, the child’s decisions are modeled by family influences. (Paloú, Drobot, 2010) There is many trainings and teaching for parents to learn how to positively be involved with their children education. Firstly, in my opinion I believe parents should heal from their own career trauma they probably had when they were children trying to find their own career path. This has been proven that being positive and advising their children instead of pressuring them to do it can a) reduce suicide among student, b) reduces stress, c) reduce anger and disappointment. On The Center for Parenting Education website, it a website that teach parents how to positively be involve with their children education. it has different roles and how parents can apply with in everyday with their children. This website is great for parents to know how to be understanding, great listeners. Understanding how your children feels during selecting a career is very important. And it can help build a better and stronger bond between the parents and the children.
