Interview Purpose This interview aims to retrieve information on the crime committed, the victim, the offender, and their family history leading up to the violent act. During this interview, I will learn more about the victim, empathize with him, and persuade him to follow through with testifying on behalf of the state against his wife. Questions Additional spaces are provided in the table for question development. Item Question Type Develop Question Relevance of Question to Interview Purpose Example Diversion How long have you lived in the area? This question type can help the person being interviewed feel more relaxed. Because it seems like a question that is not related to the problem at hand, they may feel less guarded. It can also serve to provide needed background for the interview subject. Question Type 1 (Required) Leading Can you tell me why you’re getting cold feet and what I can do to help assist in making the process a better experience for you? This question is to show that I am aware of how the victim feels and that I am here to assist him in any way possible. Question Type 2 (Required) Self-Appraisal I have been in a toxic relationship before and can understand your feelings. Can you continue to explain how her actions made you feel? This shows a rapport with the victim and makes it easier for him to share his feelings with me. Making him aware that he does not have to be ashamed of what occurred. Question Type 3 (Required) Reflective Is it correct that you stated your wife had a drinking problem and refused to get help? During the interview, the offender’s history is discussed, and I am getting clarification on what the victim is explaining. Question Type 4 (Optional) Directive I believe that you love your wife, but I also think that you want her to get help, and you no longer want to be abused in this manner. You want to see this incident resolved. Am I right, sir? This question helps to keep the victim on track and guarantees his cooperation in solving this case. Keeping him on task will ensure that he will testify on behalf of the state. Question Type 5 (Optional) Pointed Sir, I understand you love your wife, but wouldn't you want to receive justice for what happened if this were anyone else who committed this act of violence towards you? This question will assist in making the victim think about his actions and the opportunity to free himself of this toxic relationship to better himself. It also helps him put the crime into perspective to realize that his wife should be punished for what she did to him. Question Variety 2
Having a variety of questions in the interview provides both the interviewer and the interviewee an opportunity to develop a rapport. A relationship is formed between the two individuals, allowing for a better flow of questioning. These specific questions will keep the victim focused on why he is being interviewed while also allowing him to provide the full context of the incident. The questions being presented will be easy for the victim to answer and follow. These questions show empathy and understanding to the victim. It also comforts the victim in knowing he is doing the right thing. The self-appraisal, directive, and pointed questions will truly assist in keeping the victim’s feelings in check and assist with a resolution. 3
