Domestic Attacks Against the United States Timeline Date International Attacks Against the United States Theodore (Ted) Kaczynski “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski sent sixteen bombs through the mail over an 18-year timespan ultimately killing 3 people and wounding 23 others (CNN, 2023). Even though he was not charged with terrorism, his list of bombings was a terror case (CNN, 2023). The Unabomber was not affiliated with any terrorist organizations. He stated the attacks were justified “in the name of preserving humanity and nature from the onslaught of technology and exploitation” (Sanchez et al., 2023). Kaczinski exploited the U.S. Postal Service by making his bombs out of wood which made it difficult to detect (Shapiro, 2018). 1978–1995 n/a Mohamed Rashed a.k.a. Rashid Mohammed On August 11, 1982, Mr Rashed detonated a bomb on a Pan Am flight going from Tokyo to Honolulu which killed a Japanese teenager and injured several other passengers (Department of Justice, 2006). Domestic Attacks Against the United States Timeline Date International Attacks Against the United States May terrorist group whose objective was to promote the Palestinian cause by killing Israeli and U.S. citizens (Department of Justice, 2006). Responsible for placing multiple explosive devices to include the bomb on Pan Am Flight 830 (Department of Justice, 2006). n/a April 1986 Bombing of the La Belle Discotheque On April 5, 1986, a bomb exploded in a nightclub called La Belle discotheque in West Berlin, West Germany. Three people were killed, two U.S. Soldiers and a Turkish woman and injuring more than 230. The nightclub was a popular hangout for American Servicemen and women (Wikipedia, 2023c). In 2001, it was determined that the bombing had been “planned by the Libyan secret service and the Libyan Embassy” (Wikipedia, 2023c). Four people were convicted of carrying out the bombing, Yasser Mohammed Chreidi (suspected mastermind), Musbah Abdulghasem Eter, Verena Chanaa, and Yasir Shraydi (Wikipedia, 2023c). It was believed that the attack was aimed at American service members and the club was well known to be a popular hangout for Americans. Of the more than 230 injured individuals, more than 50 were American service members (Wikipedia, 2023c). n/a June 1987 Hipercor bombing On June 19, 1987, a car bomb attack was carried out on the Hipercor shopping center in Barcelona, Spain. The attack killed 21 people and injured 45 others. Initially 15 people were killed, of whom ten were women (one of whom was pregnant), three men and two children. Domestic Attacks Against the United States Timeline Date International Attacks Against the United States of gasoline which was mixed with glue and soap flakes to make a bomb weighing approximately 440 pounds which was then placed in a stolen Ford Sierra and parked beneath the shopping center with a timer set to go off at 4:12 pm on a Friday afternoon (Wikipedia, 2023d). The attack was carried out by members of the Basque separatist organization ETA. ETA was classified as a terrorist group (Wikipedia, 2023d). The attack was carried out by parking a Ford Sierra on the first floor of the underground parking garage. The bomb was hidden in the boot of the vehicle (Wikipedia, 2023d). n/a April 1988 Naples bombing On April 14, 1988, the United Service Organizations (USO) club was attacked. The terrorists used a car bomb which they parked in front of the USO club in Naples, Italy. The attack killed 5 people, 4 Italian civilians and 1 American Sailor. 15 others were wounded, 4 of which were American Sailors (Wikipedia, 2023a). The attack was carried out by Junzo Okudaira, a member of the Japanese Red Army (JRA), on the second anniversary of the 1986 United States bombing of Libya in 1986 (Wikipedia, 2023a). The terrorists parked a vehicle in front of the USO club, loaded with explosives (Wikipedia, 2023a). CIA Headquarters shooting On January 25, 1993, a gunman shot and killed 2 CIA employees and wounded 3 others. While stopped at a stop light on Route 123, outside the main gate to the CIA Headquarters campus in Langley, Va., A gunman stopped behind a row of vehicles exited his vehicle with an AK-47 assault rifle. The attack was carried out by Islamic fundamentalists Mohammad Salameh, Nidal Ayyad, Mahmoud Abouhalima, Ahmed Ajaj, Ramzi Yousef, Eyad Ismoil, and Abdul Yasin (FBI, 2016c). The group rented a van and filled it with explosives and parked beneath the World Trade Center. The explosion was supposed to topple both towers (FBI, 2016c). February 1993 n/a Oklahoma City bombing On April 19, 1995, the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, was attacked. 160 people were killed and another 680 were injured. The terrorists parked a Ryder rental truck full of explosives in front of the building (Wikipedia, 2023f). The attack was carried out by two white supremacists who were anti-government extremists, Timothy McVeigh, and Terry Nichols. April 1995 n/a 4

Timothy McVeigh rented a Ryder truck, packed it full of explosives and parked it in front of the Federal building (Wikipedia, 2023f). n/a November 1995 Car bomb destroyed military building On November 13, 1995, an explosion in the parking lot outside a building in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, that was occupied by U.S. Military and contract workers killed 6 people including 5 Americans and 60 other people were injured (CNN, 1995). “A group called The Islamic Movement for Change has claimed responsibility” (CNN, 1995). Members of the group parked a car bomb in the parking lot of the military building (CNN, 1995). n/a February 1996 HAMAS double bus bombing On February 25, 1996, two buses were bombed by suicide bombers. The attacks killed a total of 25 people, and more than 80 others were injured. It is believed that two Americans were killed on the first bus (CNN, 1996). The militant Islamic group Hamas claimed responsibility for the bombings (CNN, 1996). Hamas stated the bombings were revenge for the assassination of master bomb maker Yehiya Ayyash n/a June 1996 Khobar towers bombing On June 25, 1996, a terrorist attack, using a truck bomb, on the Khobar Towers which housed members of the United States Air Force in Khobar, Saudi Arabia. “Nineteen American airmen were killed and 498 people were wounded” (Riedel, 2022). 5
Domestic Attacks Against the United States Timeline Date International Attacks Against the United States Three parties were believed to be responsible for the bombing. “ Iranian intelligence, Lebanese Hezbollah, and a collection of Saudi Shia terrorist groups under various names including Hezbollah in the Hejaz” (Reidel, 2022). Members of the groups parked a truck bomb in the parking lot of the Khobar Towers which housed the airmen. The blast also decimated nearby buildings that housed Saudis and foreign guest workers (Reidel, 2022). [Insert text.] July 1996 Olympic Park bombing in Atlanta On July 27, 1996, during the summer Olympics in Atlanta, GA a pipe bomb exploded killing 1 person and injuring 111 (Associated Press, 2023). Originally Richard Jewell, a security guard, was suspected of exploding the bomb. Later Eric Rudolph, an Anti-government extremist plead guilty to the bombing (Associated Press, 2023). n/a August 1998 East African Embassy Bombing On August 7, 1998, multiple bombs exploded almost simultaneously in front of the American embassies located at Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in Africa (FBI, 2016a). 224 people were killed, including 12 Americans and over 4500 were injured (FBI, 2016a). The attacks were linked to al Qaeda and more than 20 people were charged in connection to the bombings (FBI, 2016a). n/a October 2000 USS Cole Bombing On October 12, 2000, 2 pilots pulled up to the side of the USS Cole about halfway in a boat full of explosives. As the 2 pilots offered friendly gestures to the crew, they detonated their explosives ripping a 40-foot hole in the side of the USS Cole. 17 U.S. 6

Al Qaeda is believed to be behind the attack (FBI, 2016b). 2 sailors pulled up to the side of the USS Cole, showing friendly gestures and detonated the explosives on their boat (FBI, 2016b). n/a May 2001 Dos Palmas kidnappings On May 27, 2001, 20 people were kidnapped from the Dos Palmas Island Resort in the Phillipeans. 3 of the hostages were American citizens. At least 5 of the original hostages were killed along with about 22 Phillipean Soldiers (Wikipedia, 2023b). Members of the group Abu Sayyaf were responsible for the kidnapping (Wikipedia, 2023b). Approximately 15 gunmen arrived to the island resort in two boats and abducted the 20 people without incident (Wikipedia, 2023b). [Insert text.] September 2001 9/11 Attacks On the morning of September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes. The first 2 planes hit the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York. One plane crashed into the Pentagon, and the 4 th plane crashed in rural Pennsylvania after the passengers revolted against the terrorists. “ The attacks killed nearly 3,000 people and instigated the multi-decade global   war on terror” (Wikipedia, 2023g). The suicide terror attacks were completed by the al- Qaeda members (Wikipedia, 2023g). Some of the hijackers took flying lessons in the United States prior to the hijackings (Wikipedia, 2023g). 7
