Subject: Concerns and Recommendations: Investment Funds Missing
To: Board of Directors,
A review of first quarter financials has been conducted that uncovered an issue of missing
funding at Graphite Bikes.
During the meeting, it has been highlighted that there appears to be a discrepancy of
$150,000 dollars in the financial records of the company.
This issue is of grave concern and following are the key reasons behind:
Missing funds are 10% of the initial capital funding that has been invested while
starting the company.
Jim, the Comptroller has no idea about why the funds have been missing and could
take up to a month to research.
Venture Capitalists will be visiting in two weeks for the discussion regarding future
funding.
Missing funds are 10% of the initial capital funding
The issue of missing funds is of grave concern for the company as the unaccounted amount of
$150,000 dollars is a hefty amount, considering the fact that it is 10% of the company’s initial
investment capital. Moreover, missing of such a large amount during the first quarter
financial review is worrisome as the company has just started its endeavour and is not in a
position to face such significant accounting errors.
Jim, the Comptroller has no idea about why the funds have been missing.
Jim, the Comptroller of the company is an old friend and my business partner in Graphite
Bikes. Although, we worked on several profitable business ventures, the recent years have
been tough for Jim both personally as well as professionally. He lost his father who left no
life insurance and Jim became the sole person responsible for around the clock care of his
mother. In addition to that, one of his other business ventures is facing bankruptcy issues
while the Security Exchange Commission has been investigating another venture of Jim.
Considering the circumstances, now Jim doesn’t have any idea about where the funds have
gone and his statement that this might be a mathematical error for which further information
needs to be gathered demonstrates negligence on his part.
Venture Capitalists will be visiting in two weeks for the discussion regarding future
funding
The reputation and financial stability of the company holds critical importance in its long-
term sustainability. Moreover, the stakeholders of the company must be kept satisfied so as to
gain future funding. The visit of Venture Capitalists is due in two weeks and during their
visit, the agenda of the meeting will be the assessment of future funding options for the
company. With a major amount of $150,000 dollars already missing and there is no evidence
where the funds have gone; the financial accountability of the company is at stake. The
stakeholders will definitely raise this concern and find the accountability practices of the
company susceptible.
Keeping under consideration the above scenario, it is of utmost importance to investigate the
concern through adopting a systematic and careful approach. My recommendation to deal
with the situation is the formation of an independent auditing team that will gather all the
relevant financial records and documentation relevant to the missing funds. The participation
of Jim, the Comptroller must be ensured throughout the process as he is the key responsible
person to manage the funds. His insights regarding this matter will be of great help and aid in
locating the actual reason behind missing capital. All the financial transactions such as
receipts, bank statements, and invoices must be identified for any discrepancy. Moreover, the
financial software of the company can be checked for any vulnerability.
I truly understand the gravity of situation and trust your leadership and commitment towards
Graphite Bikes. I eagerly await your response and an action plan that addresses this
complicated issue. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions at 409-626-0204.
Sincerely,
Kayla Kedel
Chief Executive Officer

Which of the following should be considered when a company estimates the cash flows used to analyze a proposed project?

Since the firm's director of capital budgeting spent some of her time last year to evaluate the new project, a portion of her salary for that year should be charged to the project's initial cost.
The company spent and expensed $10 million on a marketing study before its current analysis regarding whether to accept or reject the project.
The firm would borrow all the money used to finance the new project, and the interest on this debt would be $1.5 million per year.

The company has spent and expensed $1 million on R&D associated with the new project.

The City of Bainland has been undergoing financial difficulties because of a decrease in its tax base caused by corporations leaving the area. On January 1, 2017, the city has a fund balance of only $400,000 in its governmental funds. In 2016, the city had revenues of $1.4 million and expenditures of $1.48 million. The city's treasurer has forecast that, unless something is done, revenues will decrease at 2 percent per year while expenditures will increase at 3 percent per year.
Required
Create a spreadsheet to predict in what year the government will have a zero fund balance.
One proposal is that the city slash its expenditures by laying off government workers. That will lead to a 3 percent decrease in expenditures each year rather than a 3 percent increase. However, because of the unemployment, the city will receive less tax revenue. Thus, instead of a 2 percent decrease in revenues, the city expects a 5 percent decrease per year. CRISIS IT
In May 2007, Frontier Airlines Holdings hired Gerry Coady as chief information officer (CIO). Nearly a year later the airline filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11. In an interview, Coady describes how he managed IT projects during the bankruptcy and recession crisis of 2008–2009.
Fundamentally, Coady faced a situation of too many projects and too few resources. Coady used a strategy of focusing on reducing the number of projects in the portfolio. He put together a steering committee of senior management that reviewed several hundred projects. The end result was a reduction to less than 30 projects remaining in the portfolio.
How Can You Get to a Backlog of over 100 Projects?
“There are never enough resources to get everything done.” Backlogs build over time. Sacred cow projects get included in the selection system. Projects proposed from people who have left the airline still reside in the project portfolio. Non-value-added projects somehow make their way into the…
