Recommendations for Dividend Policy Target Corporation has successfully accumulated cash over the last three years (including the COVID-19 pandemic). The positive return spreads show that the corporation has effectively used its accumulated cash. These figures mean that the manager is creating value for the corporation’s shareholders. Target was able to generate this cash and create value for the shareholders through the implementation of the stock repurchase program that the corporation participates in. Buyback of stock decreases what is in circulation and decreases capital for the corporation. However, when the amount of stock available decreases, the value of the stock available increases in value. II. Target Corporation’s dividend yield and payout percentages are both slightly higher than the average for the general merchandise retail industry. The higher percentages suggest that Target is aligned with its industry peers and is rewarding its shareholders sufficiently. When looking at the dividend payouts for the three-year period, agency problems are not of concern. Higher than industry payout and yield averages show that management and shareholder interests are aligned. The higher percentages also increase investor interest. Target Corporation has carefully managed its financial situation over the three-year period (including the COVID-19 pandemic period), continued to increase its cash, and generated shareholder value. Target accomplished these things without compromising its financial stability and growth.
