Tepc 5600: Assignment 3
Now that you are familiar with several bilingual program models
and the English Language Instructional Programs in your state,
describe how you will meet the needs of ELLs in your classroom.
Discuss instructional approaches and responsibilities specific to
your content area.
I will meet the needs of the ELLs in my classroom by offering accommodations and
alternative options for completing work. The school that I'm at, has a great education
plan for ELL students. There's paraprofessionals in classes that have a large population
of ELL students, and there's an education plan made for each ELL student that the
regular education teacher receives themselves to make sure the student is getting the
proper education without being left out. So, with the schools help, and what I've learned
through this section, I think I know the best way to meet the needs of ELL students I
would teach. I'll accommodate them by making sure they have text-to-speech and
speech-to-text processors on their computers, so when we're dealing with readings and
writings they don't feel pressured to always use English when they don't feel
comfortable. I can also have English-to-Spanish dictionaries in my classroom for them to
have access to. I can provide them with alternate options for completing work in cases
where we're doing presentations, or some type of work that requires them to speak, I'll
give them the option to skip the presentation part and complete it in another form. I can
also have them present their work in a smaller group of peers, so they can try using their
English in a more comfortable setting.
