Clinical Field Experience B: Small or Whole Group Instruction
For this experience observation, as students already had a planned assignment to complete
. I observed students continue their in class reading of The Outsiders
. I also observed an
additional class period where students worked in groups and discussed their assignment of a math wor
ksheet. My mentor teacher did not teach a lesson for these class period as students were
reviewing for an upcoming quiz that would be given before the holida
y break. I did however assist and engage with some students on their thoughts and opinions of the reading and what they
liked about it. The learning objective for the class period was simply that students would be able to recognize certain elements of the novel
, write an essay about it and show evidence of it from the novel. <Title of Your Paper>
After the class period
, I had a discussion with my mentor teacher on her teaching methods and how she felt she could improve as an educator. To this she gave me many responses
as she is the youngest teache
r in the school and is only in her second year. She shared with me that she often feels unprepared and that she is sometime unsure of what she is doing. But she gave me the advice that I shouldn’t be afr
aid and that schools have a strong support system across educators
. She shared that I have the potential to be a great teacher especially after seeing the assignments that I created and shared with her. To integrate reding development into future lessons, an instructional strategy that I could
implement would be to follow in the footsteps of my mentor teacher and have a student-centered classroom. I want to make sure that students feel seen in the classroom and that thei
r voices matter. I would like to incorporate student interest into as many assignments as possible so that students could personally connect to what they are learning. By incorporating literature that features characters that look like my students and ones

that share the same experiences students can connect to the reading on a personal level which could encourage them to read. The reading fluency of the students that I observed was very exceptional. Students were able to understand and explain more rigorous concepts and thoroughly understand what was being read in the class. In another class period some students needed extra conte
xt to understand discussion questions,
but it didn’t hinder their understanding of the novel and they were able to accurately discuss what they had read in class. This first paragraph is your introduction (Approximately 150 words)
. Begin with a strong
grabber/intro statement go get the reader’s attention, and end with a focused purpose statement for the paper. The Purpose Statement is similar to a thesis statement, only slightly different. The main ideas of the overall essay must be included in your introduction paragraph. From those main ideas, the Purpose Statement provides the purpose, scope, and direction of the paper. First Heading
Begin this paragraph with a strong topic sentence. After your topic sentence, make your first claim. The following sentences will be scholarly information to support the claim you are making. Your next paragraph is your second claim, followed by scholarly supports of that claim. Continue this pattern until you have made the claims necessary for this one heading. Paragraphs are 4 to 6 sentences in length. Your concluding sentence should transition to your next heading and set of claims.

Begin this paragraph with a strong topic sentence picking up the transition from the paragraph above. Build your claims one sentence at a time using scholarly supports for each claim (same structure as your above paragraph) Paragraphs are 4 to 6 sentences in length.
Continue with headings
Continue building your paper in this manner. Use as many headings as needed to make your claim while supporting it with scholarly sources, using the sentence format and structure as noted. In many cases your headings can be directly related to the prompts in the assignment. Some prompts may not be deep enough to support an entire heading, in this case see where you can combine prompts under one heading.
Conclusion
This paragraph is just as important as any other paragraph in this essay. Make it strong and end with a solid summary of the ideas you have shared. This is NOT the place to begin new topics – if you have not talked about it in the essay, do not include it here. (Approx.150 words).
