DBMF 600 WK 3 Discussion Thread: Development of Girls; Issues and Relationship Formation The primary 21 st century issues most threating to girls becoming emotionally and relationally healthy women have swung to the other end of the continuum from American and British cultures. Young girls are often allowed, and even encouraged, to be brash, rude, crude, profane, immodest, immoral, loud, and aggressive. Some of this behavior has been consciously taught in recent years under the rubric of “assertiveness training” (Dobson, 2016). In Bringing up girls : Practical advice and encouragement for those shaping the next generation of women, (2016) Dobson states “Today’s little girls are being enticed to grow up too fast and are encountering challenges for which they are totally unprepared.” Some of the issues he lists are eating disorder, cutting and mutilating themselves and piercing their tongues, lips, noses, eyebrows, ears, navels, nipples, and private parts with spikes and rings. Some try to symbolize darkness and death in their fashion choices and bodily adornment. Others are involved in sexual aggression, drugs and alcohol, bullying, deceit, and rebellion at home and in school. Numerous other sexpots who help to warp this generation most brazen among them don’t wear undergarments at times and have even allowed themselves to be photographed by the paparazzi from strategic angels. A growing number of girls today are also binge drinking, according to the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth (CAMY) at Georgetown University. Though the numbers are smaller, there is a disturbing trend for teen girls to strip off their clothes for money. Those for sex for hire are getting younger (Dobson, 2016). Mothers play a distinct role in a young girl’s development. Dobson, (2016) speaks directly to mothers, pronouncing it is their job to acculturate their daughters and to help them become ladies. How insightful it is that Adams placed the responsibility for the essential moral character of the nation squarely on the shoulders of mothers. It is their primary task to transmit enduring principles of right and wrong to the next generation. Dobson (2016) states, a dad’s primary role is to be supportive of the mother. He should also begin to connect with the baby in the months to follow. His masculine voice, size, demeanor, and gentle discipline provide the security produced by defined limits. In a permissive world where many parents have forgotten or never knew the importance of appropriate authority, it is the responsibility of a father to help guide behavior and teach self-control. Girls that do not have the attachment from either parent, can cause behavioral, emotional, physical, spiritual, and relational, just to name a few. References Dobson, J. (2010).
