Jasmine Husain CIED 3313 September 17, 2023 Teaching Statement The elements of teaching for me are classroom management, classroom environment, execution of instruction, and overall professionalism. Now, I got my elements from the perspective as a student who has been through a Title 1 School my whole life and as an AmeriCorps member who was a tutor for several Title 1 schools. I believe that it will take a while before one teacher hits all these marks, but when they have – you’ll be able to see if from the students’ emotions to their test scores. A teacher isn’t just someone who teaches new material to someone else, but they are someone who is flexible, as well as generous with their time. Especially if they choose to teach in America. It took me a long time to realize I’ve always wanted to be a teacher. I grew up in a household where the goal was to get out of poverty and unfortunately teaching meant staying in debt. So, I tried to go to college for engineering, then dentistry, then I ended up dropping out because I didn’t want to waste my money hopping between majors. It took me until I was an AmeriCorps Member working with teachers every day to realize that this was definitely my passion. When my students passed math in their first semester because of the work my mentor teacher and I did, that’s when I knew I had to become an educator. Now, I refer to my AmeriCorps days a lot because it was the reason that pushed me to go to OSU for their OSUTeach program and further my education. When I served, I was tutoring seventh and eighth grade math. I’d say that math always came pretty easy to me when I was in K-12 and I had hopes that if I could help just one student to understand why math was important then I
knew it would solidify my passion to teach one of the most hated subjects as well as switch from K-6 to 6-12. Another reason that switched me over to 6-12 rather than K-6 was because of discipline. In the hire grades the students are more of a person instead of sponge. Yes, you have to guide them back to the main subject or to remind them to stop talking while you’re teaching, but younger students you have to do more. In the youngest grades, you have to be the one to teach them how to act and behave alongside with their parents as well as making sure their behavior is appropriate for each new setting school offers. Upper grade students already understand this and are now trying to see how far the boundaries go. To me, it’s less discipline and more mentorship. Some skills and content I’d expect I need to go through to become the best teacher I want to be are computer competency, teaching in diversity, trauma intervention, and understanding AI. I have been fortunate enough to grow up in the era of expedited technology. So, I know how to work an iPad, Chromebook, Google Classroom, etc., but I’ve only seen and used that type of technology as a student. I would need to take a refresher course on how to effectively use them. I would also want to take an additional class or course on how to best teach in a diverse school. This can go from the students’ ethnicity to their income, each part of the student is what makes them unique and that can be challenging when you’re in a classroom with 35 students from all different type of backgrounds. This would also piggyback on understanding second-hand trauma and how to help a student if they’re going through a crisis. That means I would need to find resources for all ages just in case. Finally, AI… AI is amazing and terrifying at the same time. I would want to understand what AI could do and how to best use it as a tool and not make it an enemy. I know AI can be a little bit trickier when it comes to mathematics, but every day it gets better so I’d rather be prepared than not.
