The article's main claim of [insert summary of author's main claim here]
is [insert your
evaluation of the argument here]
because ______________, ______________________, and
___________.
Main Claim:
The essay "Eat Turkey, Become American" made the major argument that celebrating
Thanksgiving, a customary American holiday, was essential for the author's immigrant family to
adapt and gain acceptance in society.
Evaluation:
Given that it examines the nuanced relationship between cultural traditions and national
identity, this claim is both persuasive and informative. Furthermore, the author's use of context
and tone makes it possible for the reader to relate to and remain interested. The reader is
compelled to discover more about the author and her experiences due to the humorous anecdotes.
Supporting Key Points:
Because of the author's sharing of personal anecdotes
, historical background
, and the
emotional impact
of her story, I found her argument to be compelling.
The author Marie Myung-Ok Lee captivates readers with her sharp and sympathetic
anecdotes about growing up the youngest sibling in a first-generation immigrant family and
giving up their own customs to adopt American ones, like Thanksgiving, in order to better
integrate into American society.
In addition to detailing the difficulties her parents faced in attempting to move to the
United States and get citizenship, Lee gives the readers a historical context. She talks about how
her father nearly starved to death during the Japanese Occupation or how her parents were
unable to speak their native Korean tongue in Japan. This historical perspective highlights the
holiday's symbolic value as a celebration of acceptance and unity, lending credence to her
contention that it plays a significant role in the process of assimilating to American culture.
Lastly, Lee's story is written in a way that draws out empathy from the reader, the
emotion it brings out supports her claims. Her description of her mother's determination to
prepare a traditional Thanksgiving meal, despite not fully understanding the holiday, is deeply
moving. It demonstrates the extent immigrants will go to to feel welcomed in the United States
as well as the significant influence that common customs may have on this process. Lee
discusses how her parents persisted in making the traditional Thanksgiving sides and décor
despite the difficulties the family faced upon arriving in the United States.
