2 The History of Family Compounds in America: A Review of the Literature Research Paper Rough Draft Abstract Family compounds, where multiple families live together on a single property, have a long history in America. Family compounds have been in the United States of America since the colonial period. This paper reviews the literature on the history of family compounds in America, highlighting their origins, evolution, and current trends.
3 Introduction Family compounds have been a part of American history since the early colonial period. In America, family compounds were initially established by European colonizers who brought with them the tradition of multigenerational living (Galenson, 2017). Having a family compound was a way of life in those times. The concept of family compounds can be traced back to traditional societies where extended families lived together on a single property (Hiller, 2017). The early history of family compounds in America goes back to colonial days. The earliest recorded evidence of family home compounds in America dates to the 17th century when European colonizers settled in the New World (Hiller, 2017). These colonizers brought with them the tradition of multigenerational living, which was a common practice in their countries (Galenson, 2017). The early family compounds in America were typically established by large families who lived together on a single property, sharing resources and labor (Hiller, 2017). This was a very common way of life in the 17th century for many wealthy families. The growth and evolution of family compounds in America during the 18th and 19th centuries, family compounds in America grew and evolved as more immigrants arrived from Europe and Asia (Hiller, 2017). The frontier era of American history saw the rise of family compounds in rural areas, where settlers often lived together in close-knit communities (Galenson, 2017). As the country urbanized, family compounds became less common, but they continued to exist in many rural areas (Hiller, 2017). In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in family compounds, particularly in urban areas (Hiller, 2017). This trend is driven by factors such as the rising cost of housing, the desire for multigenerational living, and the need for community and support (Galenson, 2017). Modern family

4 compounds can take many forms, from multigenerational homes to intentional communities (Hiller, 2017). These family compounds are now becoming a new trend today. In conclusion, family compounds have a rich history in America. Which dates to the early colonial period. These communities have evolved over time, adapting to changing social, economic, and cultural conditions. Today, family compounds continue to be an important part of American society, providing a sense of community and support for their members.
