Health Care: Independence of a Nurse Practitioner
The discipline that I chose is Healthcare; this discipline encompasses a good range of fields sand professions that are dedicated to treatment and the well-being of people. To be more specific within my discipline of healthcare, I have chosen to explore the role of nurse practitioners (NPs). In the near future I will be becoming a Nurse Practitioner, I have a very strong interest into this field of medicine. NPs are an advanced practiced registered nurses who are taught to provide comprehensive healthcare services. They are capable of diagnosing and treating medical conditions, ordering and interpreting tests, and prescribing medications. Some NPs often work in the environment of a physicians. I think that NPs working independently to be
a great topic to raise questions about the level of supervision they really need. This topic helps my discipline as it affects the accessibility of healthcare services provided by NPs. By opening up this topic, I hope to gain more understanding on the independence of NPs and have conversations around how it can improve the healthcare outcomes.
In my research project, the specific question I am aiming to towards to answer is, "Should
Nurse Practitioners be allowed to work independently?" I thought of this question when I was thinking of my own aspirations on becoming a Nurse Practitioner and contemplating the challenges of working with supervision. I believe that autonomy and the ability to work independently can positively affect the delivery of healthcare. In my opinion, it should allow NPs
to establish a better connection with their patients and open up more focus. This topic helps the

discipline to be able to show the potential benefits of expanding NP practice autonomy, which can improve access to care, increase patient satisfaction, and potentially address the primary care
shortage in underserved populations.
I tend to enter the conversation on NPs in health care; when it gets the the topic of allowing NPs to be allowed to work independently. The conversation about NPs indecencies my opinion is for them to be allowed to work by themselves. My topic will help my approach to examine the current restrictions on NPs independence. I plane to explore the potential benefits and drawbacks of allowing NPs to work without supervision and analyzing the impact of NPs independence on healthcare utilization and outcomes.
To come to the conclusion of this proposal, for the rest of this semester my research will be focused on NPs supervision in healthcare. My intentions are to explore the extent and nature of supervision required for NPs. I also intend to explore the impact on their autonomy and decision-making abilities. Additionally, I plan to intake insights from practicing NPs through interviews or surveys.
