I am here today to discuss large class sizes and the issues that occur because of overcrowding. Many issues could be addressed by early childhood education but one of the biggest ones is the size of classes. Large class sizes cause several issues but having a large class creates havoc and children are not getting the attention they need and the quality of instruction that children need. When we as teachers have smaller classrooms, we can have one-on-one instruction time with children but when it is a large class, we do not have as much time, and may not be able to get to every child. This should never be the case, but it does happen when you have overcrowded and or large classrooms. When there are too many children in a classroom, children will start to act out. They start to feel like they are not being heard or seen so they will act out to be noticed even as young as 3 to 4 years old. This does not provide a safe learning space for children. Having fewer children will provide a better learning environment and can control how many children are acting out and limiting it. A final issue that can occur with a larger classroom, is you are unable to have good conversations. Being able to have conversations and discuss what is being taught to children is vital and key. When you have twenty or more children, you can not hear everyone’s take on what you are teaching. It is constant from one voice over another. Small classrooms allow for you to have conversations with children and children do not feel intimidated to speak up and join in.
