Diversity and Learning Environments Reflective Essay
Educators have a responsibility towards the students to teach them about acceptance of
different diverse individuals and types of learners, in addition to teaching them knowledge they need to
know for school. Students emulate the teacher. Therefore, teachers must also be accepting of diverse
learners and try to reach every child. Teachers should “Communicate respect for and acceptance of each
family’s values” (Martinez, 2018). There are children from all different backgrounds composing each
class. Teachers should implement accepting behaviors so that each student feel a part. It is important in
today’s world to accept and welcome all types of people. Therefore, students must learn from young to
accept everyone no matter their background, religion, or gender.
Personal frames of Reference
It is human nature to view other from different cultures, backgrounds, or genders judgmentally
for no reason other than they are different. It is difficult to perceive differences to be ordinary behavior
when it is different from a person’s view. Responses to difference may many times be bias. In the private
school where I teach, most of us come from the same background. It is rare to have a student from a
different background. However, when it does happen, I need to work on myself to be extra sensitive
towards that students and behave without bias towards him/her. It is important to remember that what I
perceive as different, is ordinary for them. This is how they live, act, and grew up. They know of nothing
else, and perhaps think of my life as weird. Stereotyping all students from the same background or
viewing them negatively stems from not understanding their background. Unique instruction according
to each child’s background or culture is important in a classroom.

should feel a part regardless of learning differences. It is crucial for a child to feel noticed and wanted.
This can even be accomplished by sitting nearby and observing (NAYEC). This shows you care.
Males and females work differently in many areas. Therefore, gender must be something to
consider in education. Most classes who are co-ed, have issues related to complicated relationships.
Therefore, it is important for the students to learn to welcome all types of children. Girls and boys have
different types of relationships with each other and with the teacher. Females tend to use emotions in
their relationships. Educators must never act biased towards a specific gender. It is a teacher’s job to
teach the students to respect the opposite gender and act appropriately.
Having students who speak multiple languages can become quite complicated. Sometimes,
students express themselves through using interesting phrases. I try to think before I react and decide if
a child was being inappropriate or simply was ignorant that we consider it inappropriate. Additionally,
when introducing a new topic to the class, it is important to explain it in multiple ways, so every child
understands. When the school year began, I asked each child to explain the sign with rules to ensure that
all of them understand it.
A positive environment fosters proper behavior and respect between the classmates. Children
who feel recognized and notices, do not care about being different since they are made to feel equal.
Children need to be proud of their background. Through talking about their experiences, they become
proud of who they are. Teachers can also “Integrate children’s home cultures, family practices, and first
languages into everyday routines and experiences such as greetings, stories, counting,
songs, and rhymes” (Martinez, 2018).

types of people in the world. We need to learn about others, accept them, and view the world
differently (Grand Canyon University n.d.).
Conclusion
Culture is a main part of a person. It affects practically every aspect in a person’s life. Therefore,
every students’ background and culture must be noticed and acknowledged in an unbiased way. This is
an educator’s job. To be mindful to make sure all students feel welcome.
