Running Head: ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY 1 ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY Tia Walker Oct 13, 2023 Foundations of English Composition
ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY 2 In the various methods of teaching children, homeschooling has undoubtedly gained significant traction in recent decades, as it is rooted in the desire of parents to provide the best possible education for their children. Homeschooling can offer a specific and tailored curriculum by the parents, in the familiar setting of one's home. Issues can arise however, when a closer examination is taken, as it becomes clear that homeschooling, despite its many merits, may not be the best route for the majority of students. There is evidence that homeschooling is filled with challenges, and limitations, that can cause problems with a child's overall development, based on the following three reasons: limited non-family socialization opportunities, potential academic issue of bias or indoctrination, and increased ability to hide parental abuse. Traditional schooling has a capability to foster interactions among peers, that are not in a family setting. School settings naturally allow for the development of social skills, team spirit, and collaborative problem-solving. Homeschooled children, on the other hand, often miss out on these diverse interactions, and students who are homeschooled often report feelings of isolation and missed social experiences. Traditional schooling brings children together, for several hours daily, providing regular opportunities for interaction with their peers and teachers. In contrast, homeschooling, often involves individual study, frequently within only the family. This means homeschooled children don’t have daily access to a diverse group of peers or interactions, and they miss out on a school setting that can expose children to different cultures, beliefs, and ways of thinking. Not only that but traditional schools often offer various clubs, sports, and arts programs, giving students a free and safe space to exercise and learn teamwork, which teach students to cooperate, compromise, and handle, conflicts, among themselves and such as frequent group
ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY 3 interactions might be less common in a homeschooling setting. Traditional school also provides a very well-structured environment, where children learn to follow rules, in a larger community, wait their turn, raise their hands to speak, and etc. Homeschooled children may have different structured experiences that can make graduating into the real world a difficult one. The lack of non-family interaction can cause less friends as daily exposure to the same children’s groups in school can create deep friendships. Homeschooled children will need to put in extra effort to maintain peer to peer friendships, especially if said peers attend traditional schools. While parents often initiate homeschooling with the best intentions, many might not be equipped with the necessary expertise across all subjects. Traditional schools offer credentialed professionals specializing in various academic disciplines, ensuring a breadth and depth of knowledge. In contrast, homeschooling might result in significant gaps in a child's education, particularly in subjects the homeschooling parent isn't proficient in. Critics might argue that online courses and tutorials can fill these gaps, but they overlook the nuance, adaptability, and tailored instruction a specialized teacher can provide. One of the most problematic and essential discussions around homeschooling, is the potential for unintentional bias or even deliberate indoctrination and abuse that it can create, as the teaching parents’ personal beliefs, values, and perceptions, will inadvertently influence, the content, and perspective, of lessons. (Sarajlic, 2019) Abuse of children is harder to detect in homeschool settings, as the abusive adult is able to completely isolate the child, and access to mandated reporters is nonexistent in the home setting. However, not all homeschooling is the same, the degree of socialization can vary among
