TEPA 5700 /Assignment 3
Now that you are familiar with several bilingual program models and the English Language Instructional Programs in your state, describe how you will meet the needs of ELLs in your classroom. Discuss instructional approaches and responsibilities specific to your content area.
Getting to know your students as individuals is essential to be an effective teacher. First, you should get to know their names and use their names whenever possible. This to me gives the students a sense of comfort and lets them know you are speaking to them not only as students but as individuals. It is equally important to get to know the student's learning style and their strengths and weaknesses so you as the teacher can be effective in teaching how they learn. In my opinion, this type of knowledge helps to foster a relationship with the students to help them achieve their highest potential. I am an ELA teacher; therefore, I teach foundational skills that help students gain a love for reading and writing. So, when teaching ELLs, I teach lessons in whole groups and once the lesson has been taught, I break into small groups to check for understanding during our class practice time. In small groups scaffolding is imperative. Once the ELLs have gained an understanding, partner, and group work is done to help them become more proficient. I have found that students help each other in ways that a teacher cannot. When selecting paring partners and groups I do consider other students that are ELLs and those that have a higher level of understanding of the foundational skill or skills that have been taught. These groups are teacher-monitored to make sure that no one is getting off track and that the group as a whole
is gaining understanding of the lesson’s application. In the event there is an ELL student does not have a clear understanding of the taught lesson during the RTI time that skill can be reinforced or re taught is necessary. For those students that have a good understanding of the lesson that was taught it is important to progress monitor to make sure that once the lesson is taught these students are pushed to master that skill so it can be built on in later lessons. It is important for a teacher to keep in mind that the student may come to you as an ELL however the objective is for the students will be reclassified and exit from EL status by achieving a PROFICIENT on the English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT).
