1. Vocabulary is an important part of reading and comprehension. Readers cannot understand what they are reading without knowing what most of the words mean. In order for a student to expand their vocabulary in the 4 th grade they will be allowed to create their own dictionary or word catcher. When the student finds a word that is new or unfamiliar, they write the word, draw a picture to illustrate the word or definition and write a sentence using the word. This method allows the student to read the word that is new/unfamiliar, then write and draw to gain a better understanding of the word, and then write a sentence to aid in comprehension. This will not be the only method of connection we will use; this is the one we will start off with as a class. A few other methods that will be used are: 1. Answer open-ended questions/prompts about the text. 2. Continue the story from a mentor text. 3. Write a letter or journal entry as a character. 4. Write a news article about an event (real or imaginary) 5. Ask and answer questions as they read. 2. Choice Boards stuck out in the text with me because it allows the students to take the lead in their learning experience. As stated in the reading text, choice boards engage students in learning that is meaningful to them while meeting the expectations of the teacher. When a choice board is well constructed there is more than one starting point, but the end result is the same. Another way to differentiate instruction is to scaffold. In a classroom, there will be different levels of learners, so when scaffolding one might preview the text and discuss key vocabulary or chunk the text and then read and discuss as you go. Another way to provide choice and differentiated instruction is flexible groups. In flexible groups, students work in groups where each student has their own strengths and weakness. This allows the students to use each other's ideas and extend their knowledge. 3. The area I want to learn more about is Menus for added directions. This concepts is new to me and I think as students take on more responsibility of their learning they will be more successful as they expand their education. I teach lower grades but at the end of the year as we prepare our students to go on to middle school and then high school, if this
method is taught this will allow for a better success level as they continue on in the learning process. Journaling new/unfamiliar words as they encounter them. Close Reading Students will read questions twice before answering. Then before answering annotate the questions pulling out pertinent information to make sure they answer the question that is being asked. Connecting Reading and Writing Use graphic organizers for writing and reading using the same terminology to make the connection.
