BRAE 340 Irrigation Water Management Page 2 Drip & Micro BRAE 340 - Irrigation Water Management Drip / Micro Irrigation Introduction The goal of this lab is to introduce you to drip/micro irrigation systems and the pipe network used to deliver water to tree and vine crops. Typical systems found in California include drip tape either buried or on the soil surface, molded drip emitters on flexible polyethylene tubing, and micro sprayers or micro sprinklers, also on polyethylene tubing. Micro irrigation is used on a wide variety of row crops, trees, and vines. Some types of systems can be nearly disposable, lasting only a year, to more permanent systems that may last up to fifteen or twenty years. Success with micro irrigation requires very high-quality water, an understanding of application rates, and the area wetted by these systems. Today’s exercise will demonstrate the concepts of system Distribution Uniformity, the problems affecting uniformity, and the solution to some of those problems. Data Analysis Using the data collected in lab, compute an estimate of system Distribution Uniformity (DU) based on flow rate measurements. Discussion Questions Discuss the questions among yourselves, taking notes as necessary to remember the key points of the discussion. Write your own answers to the questions in the space provided. Pressure Measurements (
3 pts
) 1)
Record the pressures at the filter station. ________________ units _______ 2)
Record the pressure regulator settings at the heads of the lateral hoses. ____________ units _______ Figure 1. Lemon Grove layout System Flow Rate (2
pts
) 1)
Record the flow rate at the filter station for your block. ________________ units _______ Emitter Flow Rate Measurements 1)
Take a total of 16 micro spray flow rate measurements from 3 locations. One team will take measurements from one of the following locations: the “clean” location, the “average” location, and the “dirty” location. Collect the discharge from the micro sprayer and record the volume of water after 3 minutes. Record the volumes on the attached worksheet. 2)
Flush the end of a lateral. Collect a sample of contaminates in the flush water. Describe the debris in the “observations” section of your lab report. 3)
Make some time to observe the system in operation. Identify factors that might affect the flow rate from the micro sprayers. What might cause a difference in the amount of water received by each tree? 4)
Once you have computed the lateral DU
lq
share your computed value with the other teams. 5)
Obtain the computed lateral DU from the other teams and compute an estimate of the System DU.
