Elma Ramic Geo 330 Dec. 4, 2023 (Word count:500) Atlanta’s city transportation system that was founded and currently still operating on racism is still stuck in a racial time era. The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority or more commonly known as the MARTA is amongst the lowest of standards for public transportation systems more specifically their railroads. With the overwhelming amount of traffic and over saturation of a growing population you would think that Atlanta would have an amazing public transportation system, however it does not. Take a trip on the railroads and you will see yourself time travel back into the 70’s when the system was built. No drastic upgrades or expansions have been made since the building of MARTA railroads were opened to the public in 1979. As you travel in the outdated train carts you will see how short the travel lines are and how limiting they are for travel. You can only go so far as to specific places that are mainly populated with minorities. Anywhere in the suburbs or further away from struggling towns, there’s not a sight for public transport, not a bus or train station nearby. The transit system was built to keep the population segregated and the continuous of racism will further feed the segregation of public transportation. This is where House Bill (HB) 930 comes into play. This Bill will launch the transformation of the MARTA transportation system specifically the railroads into the greatness it should be. HB 930 is rebranding the MARTA railways from top to bottom. With new funding for public transportation the upgrade waiting to start will enlighten many throughout the city.
Starting off the racial denotation associated with the MARTA will be removed and renamed into “The Atlanta-region Transit Link Authority” or “The ATL”. The chairman of the MARTA board, Robbie Ashe acknowledged that “the MARTA name still has some historic baggage” (MARTA Rebranding). Rebranding is going to offer a fresh new start for a fresh new railroad system. The funding will also help expand the railroads advancing from 3 counties to 7 in total. “For three years running, Atlanta-area residents have ranked traffic as their top concern” (New Study). This expansion of railroads into more counties will correspondingly help with the over population and crowding in/out of the city commute. Furthermore helping the terrible air quality and pollution from the over usage of vehicles trapped in traffic daily. Additionally, a gorgeous new upgrade coming to the very outdated carts, no more riding along in the 70’s rail carts. Along with many more bonus to the HB 930 a big factor is that there will be funding from 13 more counties. This funding will regenerate and funnel in which will progressively help advance the railroads for future developments.
