B) (5 pts) In order to determine the precise location of a GPS receiver on the earth’s surface, the receiver must receive signals from at least X different satellites. What is the X in the above sentence? Why is receiving signals from (X-1) satellites not enough to calculate the exact location of the receiver? 2) A) (10 pts) Geographic Information Systems (GIS) use two main data types: raster and vector data. What are the differences between raster and vector data types? B) (5) Determine whether raster or vector data type is more suitable for the following applications: - Depth across the Gulf of Mexico - Interstate roadway centerlines across Florida - Elevation map across Tallahassee, FL - Innovation Park building footprints. - Starbucks shops around the world Questions #3, #4, and #5 require active use of GIS while utilizin g “ QGIS - an open source GIS software package. To download and install QGIS, please see the related content in the Week 12 lecture materials. Note that the lecture materials for Week 12 also include Hands- on Tutorials where step-by-step instructions are provided for several examples of QGIS use cases. Questions #3, #4, and #5 are derived from some of those tutorials. 3) (20) Please go through the Map Making tutorial ( Link ) and complete every step using QGIS. a) (17) Create a map of Tallahassee with the same futures as the Tokyo map generated in the tutorial. Export the final map as an image and copy/paste it into the Word document to submit as the answer to this question. As shown in the example figure below , make sure to: i. Have similar colors on the frame of the insider map and the overview showing the insider map on the outsider map. ii. Have the map name as “Tallahassee, FL” iii. Have a text box for the semester, class code, exam/question #, first/last name, date, and software/data credits.
11/29/2023 Page 2 of 5 b) (3) As mentioned in the tutorial, there are different layer groups for different zoom levels as the names of the layer groups are provided with reference scales for appropriate zoom levels (e.g., z4 - 1:36m). This allows each layer group to have a differen t level of details… Toggle on and off each layer group to identify the layer group where the county-level information (e.g., county borders) in the US area has started to show up. 4) (20) Please go through the Working with Attributes tutorial ( Link ) and complete every step using QGIS. a) (8) Answer the following questions: i. What are the five cities with the highest population and their number of populations according to the pop_max attribute in the provided data set? ii. What is the population (pop_max) for Tallahassee (tip: use the identify tool)? iii. At the 12 th step of the tutorial, it can be seen that there are 103 country capital cities with over 1 million population. How many country capital cities with over 5 million population? b) (12) Similar to the tutorial, create an extra layer for country capital cities with over 5 million population and take a screenshot similar to the one in step 16 th . Note that your screenshot should have an additional layer for country capital
11/29/2023 Page 3 of 5 cities with over 5 million population. Make sure your map canvas shows only this additional layer and that other layers are turned off. 5) (25) Please go through the Importing Spreadsheets ( Link ) and Basic Vector Styling ( Link ) tutorials by completing every step using QGIS. Then, (using the knowledge gained from the four tutorials) create a map of the earthquakes that occurred in 2020 2023 with a graduated color symbol. As shown in the example figure below , make sure to: a) Meet cartographic requirements (e.g., North arrow, scale bar, title, and references) b) Have a legend that explains the symbology associated with the magnitude of each earthquake. 6) (25 pts) It is often the case that those knowledgeable of GIS and its capabilities are asked to make recommendations to others on GIS software purchases. For example, a company may have heard of GIS, believing that it may be useful in their daily operations, but they may not know how to proceed in terms of which software package is more suitable to their line of business, what performance metrics to consider, etc. Please select two companies from the arbitrary company pool listed below and provide a GIS software package recommendation including a reasonable market analysis for each selected company. (minimum 300 words for each standalone letter)

GIS software’s functionality/flexibility (i.e., what does it do? how would it help your client in their day-to-day operations Size of the GIS software’s user base (e.g., do a lot of people use this recommended GIS software?) How can users search for help? Known critiques (positive AND negative) of the recommended software’s performance, flexibility, compatibility, etc. 7) A(15 pts) What is a spectral index? How spectral indices are calculated? (Min 100 words thorough explanation) B (15 pts) Briefly explain the following spectral indices while describing how they are calculated and what information they provide (Hint: one of the publications in week 12 presents a detailed understanding of spectral indices): a) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) b) Normalized Burned Ratio Index (NBRI) c) Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) d) Normalized Difference Built-up Index (NDBI) e) Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI) 8) (30 pts) (Please read through the entire question) Google Earth Engine (GEE) is a cloud/browser- based platform for planetary-scale geospatial analysis that relies on Google's processing and storage capabilities to enable large analyses in very little time. Earth Engine is home to hundreds of public remote sensing/geospatial datasets totaling more than thirty petabytes and is continuously updated as images are captured. Here are some helpful links to learn more about GEE Register for an Earth Engine account at https://earthengine.google.com/signup/ with a Gmail or edu email account. Go to the Earth Engine playground at https://code.earthengine.google.com/ to get started. Additional sources for Earth Engine include the Get Started guide or the API Tutorials . The IGIS Team at UC Barkley also posted the Introduction to Earth Engine Workshop on their YouTube channel.
11/29/2023 Page 5 of 5 Using the Earth Engine data catalog , find an image collection dataset that can be used to calculate each spectral index in Question 6. Provide basic information on each image collection dataset including the a) data provider, b) data availability dates, and c) resolution while describing which bands of the image collection dataset should be used to calculate the associated spectral index.
