3 Topic: Morphology DQ1: Teachers are often asked to support students in a virtual environment. Research the difference between synchronous, asynchronous, and blended learning environments. Which environment would be the most challenging for you to support ELLs' language development and why? Hello, class, and Dr. Blige I hope you are all doing well. Synchronous learning involves learners taking part in a shared learning experience. Asynchronous learning is when learners learn at their own pace by completing learning activities independently. Blended learning refers to any learning environment that combines online and face-to-face (or traditional) components (Blended learning basics: Using asynchronous and synchronous training activities 2023). All of them have benefits with synchronous; they have social interactions, and they also have instant feedback, guidance, and answers to questions, especially from the instructor. Asynchronous provides the opportunity for deep content processing (based on schedule, preferences, pace, etc.) and Flexibility. With blended learning, teachers can personalize students' learning. I think that the most challenging environment for ELL students would be asynchronous. Students are expected to learn at their own pace. When students don’t know the correct word to pronounce or don’t understand what they are reading without explanation, it could be very challenging for ELLs. They would probably be spending their time translating, which is not beneficial. The learning environment that would best help them would be synchronized or blended because they are having contact with friends and are getting the instruction that they need. DQ2: How can knowledge of standard affixes help students in inferring the meaning of words and expanding vocabulary? Provide an example of a common affix, its meaning, and an example of a word with that affix. How might knowledge of that affix support content area learning? By breaking an unknown word into smaller parts, you can better understand it by knowing the meaning of an affix when you read. There are several types of affixes. Affixes consist of a letter or a group of letters that can be added either to the beginning or to the ending of a word to form a new word with a different meaning. 'Unkind', for example, is formed by adding 'un-' to 'kind.' References “affixes” in the English grammar. Langeek. (n.d.). https://langeek.co/en/grammar/course/265/affixes
