Name: Justice Avant-Noble Date: 07/09/2023 Instructor’s Name: Leah Willis Assignment: SCI203 Analysis of Energy Sources Lab Title: The Effect of Energy Sources on Environmental Pollution and Human Health Instructions: In Part I of this form, record the data from the Unit 4 Lab: Analysis of Energy Sources. In Part II, follow the steps of the scientific method listed below to complete this lab report form. When this form is complete, please submit it in the submission area of the classroom. Part I: Using the Electrical Power Plant comparison, fill in the data table. You will use this information to complete your lab report in Part II. Energy Source Annual Net Power Generation (MWh) CO 2 Emissions (tons) Sulfur Dioxide, NOx, and Other Emissions (tons) Methane emissions (tons) Solid Waste Output (tons) Safety (# deaths from air pollution and accidents) Nuclear 19,959,126 -0- -0- -0- 35 tons radioactive waste 0.20 Natural Gas 1,880,832 797,711 3,457 28,200 tons 2,000 tons scale, sludge, scrapings 5.31 Coal 14,049,804 16,267,643 620,929 3,806,661 200,00 tons ash 345.91 Solar 101,965 -0- -0- -0- -0- 0.0019 Biomass 31,540 719 tons 493 tons 3,368 tons 13 tons of ash 0.146 Wind 884,986 -0- -0- -0- -0- 0.031 Hydropower 477,853 -0- -0- -0- -0- 0.012 Part II: Write a lab report using the following scientific method sections: Title: The Effect of Energy Sources on Environmental Pollution and Human Health Purpose
o In 2-3 sentences , state the purpose of the Analysis of Energy Sources Lab. The purpose of this lab is to analyze the different impacts of our environment by gathering and comparing information in different groups of energy sources to assess the usage amount and most to least harmful to our environment. Introduction o In a detailed paragraph , summarize what is currently known about renewable and non- renewable energy sources. Use the background information provided in the Unit 4 Lab: Analysis of Energy Sources. Renewable energy can be reused and is safer for the environment and safer for healthy organisms to thrive. Renewable energy is also known as alternative energy which has become a growing industry recently to help combat global warming and fossil fuels emissions. Some renewable energy sources include solar power, wind power, and hydropower. Some forms of nonrenewable sources include coal, nuclear energy, natural gas and oil. These resources come from natural resources found on the earth and with rapid use they have began to cause our ozone and health to decline as well as polluting our ecosystems and atmospheres. Hypothesis/Predicted Outcome o In one sentence , state what you expect the results of the lab procedure will be. I expect the results to show the most usage coming from fossil fuels and that they have the most impact in our declining ecosystem due to human usage. Methods o In a detailed paragraph , summarize the steps you performed for collecting the data in this lab exercise. The goal of the methods section is to include enough information that others can duplicate your process and obtain the same results. Results/Outcome o In a detailed paragraph , summarize your data. The results of the data is that renewable energy has less harmful impact to the environment than nonrenewable energy sources. Solar energy uses 101,965 MWh compared to that of natural gas which uses 1,880,832 MWh and 28,200 methan emissions where solar energy emits -0-. Coal has 345.91 deaths from air pollution while biomass has 0.146 deaths from air pollution. Discussion/Analysis o In a detailed paragraph, discuss whether you obtained the expected results and what you learned from the lab. The lab did show me the results I expected to find which was that over time the natural resources we use for fossil fuel will make our ecosystem vulnerable to further pollution. I
also see that alternative energy is more environmentally friendly than those of fossil fuels. The results of the usage amount for each form of energy was higher than expected.
