SERVICE BULLETIN NOTICE: The Type of Change and Recommended Compliance specified reflects Solar’s best judgment regarding the Service Bulletin. All questions should be directed to your Solar Field Service Representative. Solar, Saturn, Centaur, Taurus, Mercury, Mars, Titan, SoLoNOx, and Turbotronic are trademarks of Solar Turbines Incorporated. Cat and Caterpillar are trademarks of Caterpillar Inc. Specifications subject to change without notice. NUMBER: 5.13.1/100 ISSUED: September 2000 REVISED: PRODUCT: All MODEL(S): All Specifics: Applies to all Turbotronic units with 24 VDC display computers supplied directly from a 24 VDC distribution breaker. SUBJECT: VOLTAGE SPIKE SUPPRESSION Type of Change: Product Enhancement Recommended Compliance: Information Purpose: To inform customers of enhancements providing additional protection of 24 VDC control equip- ment subject to high voltage spikes on the 24 VDC supply. GENERAL INFORMATION: Since 1996 Solar has supplied display computers in control consoles powered directly from the 24 VDC battery system (18-32VDC). Some applications in the field have experienced failures of the power supply section of those computers. Analysis of the failed computers showed that the power supply had been subjected to spike voltages in excess of 40 volts. Damaging ground spikes have been found to occur when generating the arc on nearby welding equipment. Damaging signal spikes have been found to occur when low performance battery chargers go into high charge. To help protect against these spikes EMI filters conditioning the 24 VDC supply entering the consoles were upgraded to EMI/surge/spike filters. All new production control systems are now configure with the upgraded filter. SERVICE BULLETIN Page 1 of 2 NUMBER: 5.13.1/100
ACTION REQUIRED: If you are having reliability problems on your display computer, verify that 24 VDC supply to the display computer passes through an upgraded filter. If you do not have a configuration as described in the recommended arrangement for surge/spike filters section, contact your local Solar Turbines District Office for assistance. Recommended Arrangement EMI/Surge/Spike Filters: 1. 24 VDC Battery Charger Systems: a. 24 VDC from the battery charger splits and passes through one of two main circuit breakers in the control console. After the main breakers the 24 VDC supply passes through an EMI/surge/spike filter. Following the filters are separate distribution breakers to each piece of equipment. b. Approved EMI/surge/spike filters: I. Solar part number 1022716-1. This is a 32 amp CSA class 1 div 2 filter generally used in normal control systems driving the display PC. II. Solar part number 1022716-2. This is a 25 amp CSA class 1 div 2 filter generally used for the backup shutdown system or in normal control system on-skid boxes. 2. 120 VDC Battery Charger Systems: a. 120 VDC power is converted to control 24VDC power through an integrated power supply and EMI/surge/spike filter. The outputs of that power supply/filter then pass on to the distribution breakers for the normal control system and backup shutdown system equipment. b. Approved device: I. Solar part number 1021207-1. This is a double slot, 1200 watt, 50 amp, CSA class 1 div 2 (pending) power supply with full EMI/surge/spike filters. Page 2 of 2 SERVICE BULLETIN NUMBER: 5.13.1/100
