Cristhiam Cabrera 10/2/2023 SCI-200 Project Second Draft The ocean is one of most beautiful sights in the world, but also one of, if not the most important resources in our solar system. Water is unique to earth as it is the only planet with life in our solar system, out of all planets we have earth is only one with water and that contains life. Now imagine if I told you that due to global warming and CO2 emissions that the ocean is being affected in negative way? Well, it’s true and maybe you are thinking ehh, so what? I don’t live near the ocean so why should I care? Well even if you don’t live near the ocean acidification can still impact you even if not directly as the effects of it will be felt not just now but if nothing is done the more severe action will be later down the line. This issue is very significant as it does not impact the food, we humans will consume but it will in turn lead to it affecting local economy that depends on the ocean and fishing industry, but it will also affect moving and migration patterns if those economies collapse due to change in the ocean industry. My research question is as follows: What are the long-term effects of ocean acidification on human life and economy? The three sources I used were the websites of both fisheries.noaa.gov, EPA.gov (united states environmental protection agency) and university of Chicago journals.uchicago.edu. I chose from these three websites I chose them because they were all .gov websites meaning that it has information that has been verified by experts instead of any .com website that could give information. While I tried to use the SNHU library it didn’t provide me with the actual information to answer the research question. The sources I used are all complex but simple when
it comes to understanding them, meaning that when it comes to looking at the specific information that I need to answer my question. I made my choices by going on goggle and just typing in my specific question and only choosing websites ending in .gov rather .com. The audience for these issues would be environmentalist and people who just vested interest in economic development of town or cities on the coast who depend on fishing and tourist industry to survive the effects of migration as well will have if those jobs being dependent on ocean industry must move because of ocean acidification. Understanding the issues goes a long way towards understanding the problem, it doesn’t mean the ocean is going to become going to turn into acid like the ones found in car batteries. But what does mean is due to the PH levels decrease animals who have carbonate-based shells and skeletons are at risk for dying off due the PH change. But it also affect the life of fish as they cannot handle certain PH changes and if they experience it would lead to either decrease in harvest or migration to better PH waters which would also lead to decrease in a harvest. The message I would say about this is that this is a serious topic that needs to be talked about more so much of world relies on fishing and other products roughly around 10 to 12 percent of the world that would be affected if this issue isn’t address. But not just that as previously stated this could destroy places like corals reefs so those tourist income like the great barrier reef in Australia brings in an annual revenue of 6.4 billion dollars. That is a lot of income that would just stop being brought into the country, that would also affect the country who has over 22 million Australians living near the coast or 87 percent of population. This isn’t just a problem for Australia since global warming is melting the ice caps and making the ocean rise, we are algo going to in danger of displacement. In case you haven’t noticed the world is getting hotter every year, due to the greenhouse effect, and the release of more CO2 into the atmosphere.
