Chapter 12, Case Study 2 1 Gina Gutierrez Health Disparities in the U.S. December 18, 2023 Professor Armand
Chapter 12, Case Study 2 2 Many stories are the same as Sally’s, which is very unfair to people who are ready to retire and not have to worry about having insurance or not. When the elderly are getting to retire, I think that it is helpful for them to receive different options of Medicare and know what their options are regarding medication, copays, deductibles, etc. before they are close to their retirement. In Sally’s situation, she was under the impression that Medicare was like having almost free single-payer insurance, per the political debates she had been watching. When it was time for Sally to choose her insurance, she came to the realization that Medicare wasn’t truly what it was portrayed to be and found that the government did not provide any services directly. Sally had two options, she could use her consumer skills or seek out help from free private Medicare consultants that would explain her options and packages that are available. I think that having free Medicare consultants provides the elderly with different types of insurance, differences in opinions, and ways to go around saving on insurance. It is harsh that the government does advertise Medicare often, but they aren’t the ones helping elderly people in obtaining the best plan for them. In my opinion, I do not think the government wants to provide services directly to the elderly because they do not want the responsibility of keeping track of every person who needs Medicare when the time comes. It entails a lot of work because you need to make sure they have a plan that is perfect for them, make sure medications will be paid for, and if copays are needed, will they be affordable for the person . “ Private agencies typically work much faster than the average government office. There are several inefficiencies found in the governments at all levels because there is no incentive for them to improve their processes.” (Gaille 2019) The government has other priorities that it needs to attend to, hence why they are hiring private agencies to take care of the elderly and their needs regarding Medicare. Although
Chapter 12, Case Study 2 3 the government hires contractors and it may seem like they lose out on money doing it this way, it is the other way around. Government officials can pay these contractors the same wage but will still save up to fifty percent on labor expenses due to vacation pay, sick time, and health benefits. This ties into why there is so much competition in attracting Medicare consumers, the government is hiring so many that they need to compete with each other to make a profit for their company. The providers may be stating that the rates are low but then when a person is ready to look at the rates of Medicare, they may be brought up to benefit the company. There will be a handful of companies that will reach out via mail, email and even messaging just for you to check out their company. In the textbook, Sally stated that she was being bombarded by ads from advice services for several months via ads on TVs and mailings.
