ENV 101 Module Two Worksheet This worksheet will provide you with an opportunity to explore the economic pros and cons involved in environmental science methods. Economic considerations are an important piece of your final project. Select one of the two following methods and answer the provided questions: alternative methods of farming or genetically modified foods. Note: You may complete this assignment in a separate Word document. If you choose to do so, be sure to number your responses to match the questions provided in the worksheet. To complete this assignment, review the Module Two Worksheet Guidelines and Rubric document. Option 1: Alternative Methods of Farming 1. Select one of the following alternative forms of farming: small-scale farming, alternative livestock production systems, or perennial agricultural systems. Small-scale farming 2. How does the method work? What is the impact of this method on the environment? Small scale farming involves cultivating small plots of land and using traditional farming methods with basic tools and physical labor instead of large-scale machines and chemicals to produce food for small communities or families. The produce from these farms is then usually sold at farmer’s markets rather than exported to the masses. Small-scale farming promotes biodiversity by encouraging the cultivation of larger varieties of crops and plants which helps overall soil quality, preserves habitats and provides food for wildlife. Small-scale farming also conserves natural resources through minimizing soil erosion and reducing the amount of pollution and chemical runoff that is seen in larger scale farming methods that use synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. 3. List the economic pros and cons of the farming method: Pros Cons 1. Local economy boost through local sales. 2. Higher quality produced at lower costs. 3. Community building through farmers markets. 4. Reducing reliance on imports by promoting local production and consumption 1. More labor intensive due to less equipment used. 2. Limited production from lower yields. 3. Risk of crop failure. 4.Limited distribution channels and markets to sell, limiting profitability.
5. More sustainable agriculture from conservation of resources. 5. Limited financial resources and technology. 4. How do economic factors influence the use of this method of farming? Economic factors play a significant role in the adoption and success of small-scale farming methods. Small-scale farming usually relies on traditional methods which can be more expensive in the long run compared to industrial techniques making some unable to compete with larger farms on a cost basis. Smaller farms also cannot offer goods at lower cost than the larger farms but can try to offset that by cultivating a niche market or having higher quality specialty crops. The limited access to financial resources also plays a role in small-scale farming and can hinder the ability to invest in equipment needed, hire laborers, and make improvements to their farms. 5. Provide at least one government resource (.gov) to support your responses. Solutions for small-scale farms . Natural Resources Conservation Service. (n.d.). https://www.nrcs.usda.gov/resources/guides-and-instructions/solutions-for-small-scale-farms Small Farm Funding Guide . Small Farm Funding Guide | National Agricultural Library. (n.d.). https://www.nal.usda.gov/economics-business-and-trade/small-farm-funding-guide Option 2: Genetically Modified Foods 1. What is the impact of genetically modified foods on individuals? On the environment? 2. List the economic pros and cons of genetically modified foods: Pros Cons 1. 1.
2. 3. 4. 5. 2. 3. 4. 5. 3. How do economic factors influence the use of genetically modified foods? 4. Provide at least one government resource (.gov) to support your responses.
