Compare and contrast the two organizations in your portfolio project. Are the differences and similarities what you expected or not based on what you knew about the organizations and/or industry? We all know ExxonMobil to be a global leader in crude oil, natural gas, and petroleum products. This large company is composed of several business units including Upstream, Energy Products, Chemical Products, and Specialty Products. The segment that surprised me the most was the Upstream segment as it is dedicated to investing in research and development of new technologies for "carbon capture and storage, hydrogen, and lower-emission fuels." As they state, the global energy business is extremely competitive and they must keep up with the demands of the world's energy needs while also following the laws and regulations of different countries regarding carbon emissions. Other risks include dealing with and operating around several economic, political, legal, and public health issues, fluctuations in the financial markets, and the wind and solar industries among others (Exxon Mobil Corporation, 2022). Unlike ExxonMobil, Valaris specializes in offshore drilling contracts to international, governmental, and international oil and gas companies. They have one of the world's largest offshore drilling rig fleet and operate in the Gulf of Mexico, South America, the North Sea, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia Pacific. Their drilling contracts are bought through a highly competitive bid process. Because they have the opportunity to receive an unfavorable contract, it is a risk to them. Once a customer wins a contract, they can use their rig. Because of the dangers of drilling oil, insurance is an important part of their business. Depending on the contract, Valaris could or could not be liable for certain spills or injuries. Other risks include complying with increasing environmental laws and government regulations, economic and political events, and greenhouse gas and climate change impacts. Like Exxon, Valaris started a BOD ESG Committee in 2021 (Valaris Limited, 2022). However, this committee is not as advanced as Exxon's. While these two companies are in the same industry, they are not entirely similar. I will need to take careful consideration of each company's business operations before evaluating the results.
