Workers in many occupations want a stronger voice in the workplace and there is increasing recognition that this is a fundamental human right. Do you believe that voice in the workplace is a fundamental human right? Why or why not? Yes, I believe employees should have a voice in the workplace. The objective of labor relations is based on a relationship of efficiency, equity, and voice (Budd, 2021). These three objectives work together, efficiency is stated as the productive, profit-maximizing use of labor to promote economic prosperity. Equity is the fairness in the distribution of economic rewards, and voice if the ability of all employees to have meaningful input into workplace decision. When equitable treatment and employee voice increase commitment, reduce turnover can improve productivity and quality increasing efficiency (Budd, 2021). Therefore, employee voice can improve productivity on many ways. Do you believe Unions are still relevant today? Why or why not? Labor Unions are still staying relevant and rallying for workers whether public or private sector to ensure that workplaces are safer and negotiate fair wages and working conditions. Unions contribute to working people earning a good living and having a better life. Some of the critical issues in our human resources are low wages workers trying to move out of poverty and support families, significant labor market disparities and the need to educate individuals as lifelong learners due to the ever-changing technology (Budd, 2021). Has Union membership increased or decreased since World War II in the U.S.? Why do you think that is? Union membership made an increase during the World War II Era. It is believed that the peak of union activity in the US was round 1970 and there has been a decrease ever since due to weak labor laws to protect human rights and weak health of the US labor movement (Budd, 2021). How can this information benefit you in the workplace? This information has benefited me in providing a significant awareness in the utilization of Unions. It helped me understand the several facets of labor relations. Also, the importance of employee’s voices and its influence on certain laws, including discrimination, sexual harassment, unsafe working conditions and equity in the workplace (Budd, 2021).
