Walsh College SWOT Strengths : One of the biggest strengths from the student perspective is the consistency and helpfulness of counselors. Experienced professors provide real workplace learning. It has been named one of the best in online education. It has the highest job placement in Michigan at 98%. Internship and connections programs. Weaknesses : Limited programs for students High tuition fees Small campus Low in person attendance compared to online attendance. Opportunities : Expansion of flexible learning. Growing demand for Business related education. More scholarship programs to make tuition affordable. Threats : The obvious threat that is true for most is competition. Economic downturns can pose a threat to Walsh. Enrollment declines due to high tuition costs.
Five Forces Model 1. Competitive rivalry : Medium threat - Colleges around the US are adapting to changes in the world of finance as new technology rises. Education that is geared towards crypto currency and blockchain processing is growing in many colleges. - This is still new and continuing to grow. That said, Walsh needs to have continuously updated education to stay ahead and adapt concurrent to the changes in the finance world. 2. Supplier power : High threat - Professors with expertise in this new field may be very difficult to find which would give them a lot of bargaining power when they do. - Textbook suppliers may be given bargaining power when setting prices for new material books. 3. Buyer power : Medium threat - Students can choose from a variety of colleges that offer this education. - Students are likely to have high expectations for the quality of this type of learning. - The only reason it is not a high threat is due to the size of customers. More customers means more power for the college. 4. Threat of substitution : Low to Medium threat - There is a high demand for expertise in this area so students may recognize this and be more likely to choose this new program. - There aren’t many ways to substitute this education unless it is with competitors and as stated earlier Walsh can stay ahead with updated education. 5. Threat of new entry : High threat - This addition is by no means easy to do and cheap, but it is the future. - Colleges across the US would benefit greatly from adding these programs and are aware of the change in the finance world. - Barriers to entry are moderate, but there is a high demand for these programs, which will generate many new entrants.
I think that with the right execution that this is a viable addition. There is so much to account for but it will all be possible if the execution is good and the college adapts to continuous change in the markets.
