Your Words Matter Assessment Directions: Fill in the information for each section. All answers must be written in complete sentences. Introduction: Write the introduction for your paper. Your introduction should be a minimum of five sentences in length and follow the format from the lesson. Electric vehicles are expensive and most people are waiting for the technology to improve, so the price will be affordable. Electric vehicles currently have a high up-front investment. Yes, it’s true, you will save money on fuel, but the infrastructure is still catching up and is plagued by limited public charging stations. The technology will improve in the years to come, and the costs will come down eventually as the competition in this sector improves and heats up. For now, it appears, most Americans will wait and consider hybrid-type vehicles to help with carbon emissions and save on the present expensive all-electric technology. Paper Outline: Outline the body of your essay. Follow the format from the lesson. Make sure you include a topic sentence for each body paragraph, quotes from your sources, and internal citations. Highlight or underline the rhetorical appeals you incorporate. II. drive electric vehicles. A. Yes, I believe we can all agree that electric vehicles have many environmental benefits. They require less energy to manufacture, can be powered by renewable energy sources, and release no tailpipe emissions. B. However, producing the batteries for electric cars generates a significant carbon footprint, and the source of the electricity being used to fuel the EV should also be considered in the carbon equation. According to Sustainable Future, "electricity grids in most of the world are still powered by fossil fuels such as coal or oil, and EVs depend on that energy to get charged. Separately, EV battery production remains an energy- intensive process." (Choudhury, S. R.) C. Currently, many people are convinced that electric cars are best for the environment and will save you money on fuel costs and maintenance. D. This may be true because of the fewer moving parts of a combustion engine, but be aware that replacing the battery packs is expensive. A full replacement can cost upwards of $6,000. Sustainable Future mentions that experts agree that a transition from gasoline-powered cars to EVs is not a panacea for the global fight against climate change and says that a transition from gasoline-powered cars to EVs is not the total answer in the global fight against climate change. III. Just to be clear, I believe we all want to help the environment, but driving electric cars vehicles still has a high up-front investment. A. The electric car is designed out of necessity to repair our broken planet from the harmful effects of carbon emissions. The underlying question is: is it too early to buy? The technology is there but the costs are very high for most consumers to accept the conversion. B. According to the NY Times article, "high prices are caused by shortages of Unless Otherwise Noted All Content © 2022 Florida Virtual School. batteries, of raw materials like lithium, and of components like semiconductors. Strong demand for electric vehicles from affluent buyers means that carmakers have little incentive to sell cheaper models." (Ewing, J.) C. Policymakers are promoting electric vehicles as a solution to climate change. But the problem is that battery-powered cars are much too expensive for the vast majority of Americans to justify the switch. D. The NY Times article suggests that commodities like lithium, an essential ingredient in batteries, helped raise the average sticker price of an electric vehicle by 14% last year to $66,000, $20,000 more than the average for all new cars, according to Kelley Blue Book. (Ewing, J.) IV. Additionally, the technology is still at its infancy and will improve in the years to come. A. The costs will come down eventually as the competition in this sector improves and heats up. B. Sergey Paltsev, a senior research scientist at the MIT Energy Initiative and one of the study’s authors, told CNBC, “ The full benefits of EVs will be realized only after the electricity sources become renewable, and it might take several decades for that to happen.” (Choudhury, S. R.) C. Also to consider are the unethical and environmentally unsustainable mining practices. Many countries supplying raw materials like cobalt and lithium are under pressure to deliver while treating their workers inhumanely. D. Metals such as lithium and cobalt provide examples of the awkward issues that lie ahead, said Herrington. “Both elements are needed to make lightweight Unless Otherwise Noted All Content © 2022 Florida Virtual School. rechargeable batteries for electric cars. In the case of cobalt, 60% of the world’s supply comes from the Democratic Republic of the Congo where large numbers of unregulated mines use children as young as seven as miners. There they breathe in cobalt-laden dust that can cause fatal lung ailments while working tunnels that are liable to collapse.” (McKie, R.) Body Paragraph: Choose one body paragraph from your outline to write. Make sure to include at least one rhetorical appeal and highlight or underline it. We all want to help the environment, but driving electric vehicles still has a high up-front investment and is it really better for the environment? Making any car is an industrial process that involves emissions; the only truly zero-emissions vehicle is the one that isn’t built. Wait for the technology to catch up with the demand and allow low to mid income people to enjoy the benefits of an electric future car. Conclusion: Write the conclusion for your paper. Your conclusion should be a minimum of three sentences in length and follow the format from the lesson. There are disadvantages in considering purchasing an electric car. They include finding charging stations, charging times, higher initial costs, limited driving range, and battery packs can be expensive to replace. An electric car could possibly be a good purchase if you live in an urban environment with fast charging infrastructure but most people in rural or suburban areas would prefer the convenience of gas stations to avoid the anxiety of losing your charge and getting stranded. There is no doubt that the future is electric but the underlying technology needs to mature. Unless Otherwise Noted All Content © 2022 Florida Virtual School.
