Research Question: Do taller people eat more candy? Hypothesis: H0: There is no relationship between height and candy consumption. H1: Taller people consume more candy than shorter people. This is a two-tailed hypothesis since the relationship could go in either direction. Study Design: This would be a correlational study with 50 participants. Height would be measured in inches and candy consumption would be measured by a survey asking the number of candy bars eaten per week. Statistical Test: A Pearson correlation would be used since height is a continuous variable and candy consumption, though discrete, acts as a continuous variable. Height is the predictor and candy consumption is the outcome. The Pearson correlation evaluates the linear relationship between two continuous variables. The assumptions are that the variables are bivariate normal, linearly related, and without significant outliers. Conclusion: If the correlation is significant and positive, we would conclude that taller height is associated with greater candy consumption, supporting the alternative hypothesis. If non-significant, we would fail to reject the null hypothesis and conclude there is no relationship between height and candy consumption. Potential errors are incorrectly rejecting a true null hypothesis (Type I) or failing to reject a false null hypothesis (Type II).
