1 Incident Selection for the AAR Dedric Johnson EMM-605-O500 Economics and Human Issues Professor Dr. Scott Downs July 26, 2023
Incident Selection for the AAR Identification of the incident and summary of the event. In the city of Memphis, over the past few weeks, the city has been hit with severe storm damage that left 100,000 people without power for days. When it was almost restored to the town, another round of severe storms came and knocked out power again. Memphis Light Gas and Water (MLGW ) worked again to restore power to those who lost control (Bolden & Gray, 2023). The MLGW power outages returned to 70,000, and the company lost so much headway in its restoration efforts. The outages got down to 49,000 customers. Just as the previous week, another storm came, and power was out again. People were frustrated by the constant outages. Power outages have been a problem for the past few years in Memphis. When severe storms come through the area, residents always lose power (Bolden & Gray, 2023). The site has never experienced storms like these back to back to back. The storm left most of the city without power. People want the aging 60-year-old infrastructure to be replaced. MLGW called on 110 crews from other energy companies to regain strength in the city and surrounding areas n the county (Bolden & Gray, 2023). Justification for selection that explains why this leads to improved practice in the field. A day after a powerful storm blew through the Mid-South, tens of thousands of residents in the city and county did not have power. MLGW had to answer questions about the aging infrastructure. The utility has talked about upgrading the system for years to prevent these widespread outages (Turner, 2023). The damage is measured to be the sixth worst in company history. The damage is attributed to vegetation but much more than the trees and wind. The company did not follow its five-year plan (Turner, 2023). MLGW president has been mentioning modernizing the circuit breaker system. The company claims to make these improvements, but 2
severe weather keeps knocking out the system like nothing is updated. The company needs new measures to combat or mitigate the damage done by storm systems. 3
